It's getting to be that time, my tires are getting pretty bald in places, so I'm looking for new tires when I get the cash. I want at least good performance, has to shed water very well living down here in FL with the sudden thunderstorms that pop up over head, and I'm looking for a good size to look for. I think the last I heard 225/xx/16's were good, I can't remember the aspect ratio to save my life. And I'll probably never see snow again in that car until I get new tires again, so no need to worry about that. Thanks everyone!

I just put on a set of Riken Raptors. They are made by Michelin. I went with 225-55/16s on my slicers. They fit great and have a good looking tread. They are a ZR speed rated tire, and they have an "excellent" wet and dry traction rating. The best part? They were $80 each.

I have the Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712s in the 225/55ZR-16 and they are great. Great steering feel and handling and they grip the wet roads in NC perfectly. Even in hard rain, I don't feel any aquaplaneing. I just had to replace two and I had do do some searching but they are still available. There the best tires I've ever had on the SHO.

GS-D3s are absolutely incredible! They ride extremely smooth for a UHP tire, handling is extremely predictable and I never imagined a tire would perform so well in the rain! They did cost me nearly $800 w/ a road hazard plan, but the performance is genuinely worth every cent IMO! :hail:

I second that notion...the Riken Raptors or dayum good in wet weather (I'm in Atlanta, so I know about those sudden thunderstorms)...only thing is that they don't have a long life. I think I went through a set in about 25K. Lasted from Nov 05 till last month, but for the price, I'd go with them again. :thumb: The Fusion HRi are okay, Continental has the Extreme Contact in 215/60/16 which are superb, and Pirelli P4 are SUBLIME, but pricey there too!

This is the exact thread i needed.
I needed some new tires and my buddy worked for continential so i asked him to find me a set.
Well he did, got them mounted, put them on...
and they didnt fit. I dont know what he ordered but they were like off-roading tires

So im now again in the search for some tires and soon so i can get the SHO on the road again

Could someone tell me what the original tire size is suppose to be...
i dont want to buy another wrong set
and do these look like a good deal, or just junk: http://www.ec-securehost.com/OnlineTires.com/Riken_Raptor_ZR.html for the 225-55/16

2K? You have a serious, serious alignment problem.

Got two sets in the household, the set on my wife's 540i are at about 15K, and the set on the Saab at 10K, and both sets look like they'll be good for at least 25K.

How were your GS's wearing? If you wiped out a set in 2k(!), you must have a massive alignment toe (like.. 1/2" out of spec.!!) setting problem. I have just about 2k on mine and they are but 2/32nd away from the amount of tread they had brand new, on the fronts. As JEM said, you should get somewhere within the 25k ballpark, unless you do some ungodly driving! If you peg it all the time, expect about 10k out them. This is the case, however, with any tire your beat the snot out of.

I just bought some stock size 216/60/16 Sumitomos from The Tire Rack for $265 shipped for all 4.
I had some of them on my old lady's DD Geo and they last forever.
If they can last with her, they must be a good tire.

It does no good to say 'Yokohamas' or 'Sumitomos' - those companies (like most tire makers) make any number of very different tire lines, some are very sticky, some are rock-hard high-mileage tires, and some are just moderately cheap crap.

Same for Goodyear - a GS-D3 is a very different tire from an RS-A which is a very different tire from, say, an Eagle LS, and someone who buys an Eagle LS better not be expecting the kind of grip one gets from a GS-D3 (and the guy who buys a GS-D3 better not be expecting the kind of treadlife one gets from a slippery Eagle LS.)

What's critical to figure out for yourself is what you want from a tire. How long a tire lasts is one metric, but treadlife and dry-road grip are pretty much polar opposites - you buy grip, you trade off life and vice versa.

For what it's worth, I've had good Yokos and bad Yokos, I've had only one set of Sumitomos and they weren't any good, but Sumitomo used to own Dunlop and I've had both very good and poor Dunlops.
