i am replacing my timing belt and changing out my water pump as well, but my question relates to timing. i have been turning the engine, via the passenger side road wheel with the tranny in 5th gear and it is working fine. but...i can not get the timing marks on the belt to line up with the cam pulleys?? the closest they come is one tooth to the rear. and this has happened twice, i might have missed it line up perfectly, but for it to go that close twice, could my car be out of time??? it ran before i started this project. over the course of the last year i have felt a power decrease and a huge jump in fuel comsuption, but i thought it was something else. could the timing belt have jumped a tooth??!! and if so, how can i check that?? the last timing belt service was done @75k, iam at 124k, and the previous owner had a shop up in washington state do the work. any help would greatly be appreciated
