Does anyone have any tips on how I can turn the camshafts so that the timing marks on the intake sprocket are in the correct place. I know the timing marks on the timing chain and sprockets line up in a horizontal line with the head surface,(per HELM's ) but when installing the front intake sprocket the timing mark is not in the correct place. Are the timing marks on the secondary sprockets only for aligning the intake and exhaust cams? And then once those are aligned can I turn them to where the timing mark on the intake is in place?

TIA

Marks are on ONE side of the chain only ("white" link; it's not really white, just not as dark. Look for links that look 180° apart from each other. Mark 2 yourself if you like.

Turning cam: 27mm or 1 1/6" wrench. Do this ONLY if the timing belt is off the car, or you have the plugs removed (if the resistance feels too great, then only with the belt off the car).

There is a square block on the camshaft near the sprocket. Make sure those are opposing (at 0° & 180°, away from each other), line up the sprocket onto the camshaft (id mark / dimple & bolt holes).

I know what I mean anyway, hope I'm explaining it correctly. Now, there is a drilled hole in the sprocket which is SUPPOSED to line up with the dimple, etc. - it does not always do so, and don't worry if it doesn't. Go by the ID mark, not the drilled hole (I've seen one sprocket set that was drilled about 45° off from the ID mark; no biggie, since you couldn't bolt the sprocket up that way anyway).

Good luck.

Thanks Fred. Got the head gaskets yesterday. I noticed that on the intake cam the hole is correct but on the exhaust cam it isn't? But as long as the marks are 180 degrees in the horizontal they are aligned right?
