How much side to side play is considered normal on the timing chain tensioners? the front tensioner seems to twist around quite a bit, is that normal?

Yes. The portion of the tensioner that pushes up against the chain is held in place by the pin pushed into the side of the tensioner. Due to the design the tensioner is allowed to 'twist' just a bit.

Some old tensioners I have pulled out of cars have the grooves worn in them at a bit of an angle.

No worries as long as you have plenty of pad and your tensioner still moves...up and down.

-that's a nice clean motor you have there.
