You can't. Get someone's or someone to check it for you. Or get the timing belt install instructions from the shotimes.com faq. and reinstall the belt to be sure it's on time.

johnny boy:
How can i without a timing light find out if my 89 sho has skiped some teeth.
For the main belt only,,, just remove the upper and lower timing belt covers. There are alignment dots on both cam gears, and on the crank GEAR,,(not the accessory belt pulley).

With both cam dots pointing straight up, at the alignment marks behind them, the crank pulley dot should be at about 5 O clock, and aligned with a bump in the casting behind it. The rubber timing belt only drives the 2 intake cams,,there is a timing chain going between each intake cam and it's associated exhaust cam. Not easy to check those, must pull the valve covers off and see if the "alignment flats" are parallel. Those are flat ground areas near the rear of each cam.

You only have to remove the upper timing belt cover to view the camshaft pulleys. With a 19mm socket on the crank damper, rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the crank damper's second, white mark is aligned to the "0" index on the middle timing belt cover. The index marks on the camshaft pulley teeth should be at exactly 12 o'clock and aligned with the index marks on the rear timing belt cover. See the picture below. If the index marks are at 6 o'clock, rotate the crankshaft clockwise one more revolution. The white marks on the timing belt will not be in the position shown. Probably the only time you will find the marks on the belt in that position is when you first install the belt.

Timing belt slipped, incorrect spark timing or plugged catalytic converters.

Check the plug and the wire. The coil that fires the #4 cylinder also fires the #3 cylinder (rear, driver side). Check to see if you are getting spark at that plug. If so, it's the plug or wire. If not, It could be a bad coil in the coil pack.

Scott, out of the codes he told me, I think one of them was 46>coil 2 failure. Is that the coil that runs 4 and 3?
