I have just replaced the cam seals, and I used the SHOphoenix as my guide. All went well except they mention that the timing belt has marks on it. One for the 3.0 and 3.2, however my belt has no markings on it at all. Is this gonna be a problem. I already have my cams lined up and the sprocket.

:thankyou:

Back in Michigan ... again.
The marks are important because they ensure proper spacing of the belt between the cam sprockets as well as the crankshaft. It may appear easy to just stick the belt back on, but it's VERY easy to be off by a tooth. Just lining up the timing dots on the sprockets and engine isn't enough; without the marks on the belt you'll have no way of knowing whether or not the belt is spaced properly between the sprockets, and there is sufficient slack in the belt as to allow significant room for error.

Besides, if the marks are worn away, then the belt has seen some use, no matter how good it looks. You've done all this work, just go get a new timing belt and save yourself some frustration.

If you have the belt off, and the marks are worn off it, then the belt should be replaced.

Back when I first acquired my SHO I had the covers off for some reason and I recall thinking to myself that the timing belt looked "good". So at the time I figured I'd put off doing a front 60K until I had a good reason. Well, just a few months later this is what my "good" timing belt looked like:

(Talk about an all-systems shut down. One moment I'm stomping the throttle watching the tach approach 7K, the next moment - nothing).

It certainly gave me a good reason to do that front 60K, in any case.

Thanks, I did post it. Some info though. I have a cousin who has 3 SHO's and has performed a lot of work on his own. We took my tensioner assembly and compared it with another known good one. The diference is amazing. The plunger from my 94 181K couls be pushed in with a bit of effort. The good one was very difficult to push in. We disassembled the "bad" one and put in some oil then reassembled...The results were the same as the known good one. So, I suppose that most/soem of the oil must have leaked out over the years. We're (not were) going to experiment with the amount of oil and try and locate a replacement seal which sits under the c-clip. I'll finish assembling the engine tomorrow and make certain that the noise is gone. Where do you live in Michigan? I retired from Ford in '07 and made many, many trips there...know Dearborn like my hometown..thanks again...Jim
