Ticking sound from behind passenger side dash at 3k rpms?

Just the other day I noticed a ticking sound that only is heard from about 3000k rpms up to around 3500. It is coming from behind the dash on the passenger side. It sounds like its coming from the firewall area.

I at first thought it was just the dash creaking since its cold but the more I drive it it sounds mechanical. The car drives fine.

I recently removed the front turbo BOV hose and am using Torrie's 87 octane tune.

When I use the manual shift option and hold the gear around 3000 rpms the noise remains constant.

Could be the beginning of the infamous blend door problem. Why it would manifest at that particular time, I do not know. Maybe have someone hold the glove compartment door open while driving to see if the location of the sound becomes more evident.

I'd suggest you pull the spark plugs and see if they can tell any story. I wonder if what you're hearing is pre-detonation in the cylinders from the low octane fuel. Have you tried a higher octane fuel or maybe reverting to the stock "tune" to see if that changes the noise?

Great point - my car runs very noticeably poorer with 87 - so I stopped using it. I think I read on this forum the car will "learn" to use 87 and that is what I used when I first got it, but last summer I started using premium and don't regret have to pay $4 more per fill for the extra performance.

I actually am running 89 octane with the 87 octane tune. I am going to change to the 89 tune and see what happens.
