For a couple weeks, I've noticed a ticking from my motor. It does not have a pattern to it (ie. ticking is not rythmic), and it is audible at idle (too quiet to hear at other RPMs). Today, I noticed something a little scary - it seems to be coming from the bottom end. I closed the hood, crawled under, and it was a little louder down there, and very high pitched. I'm puzzled as to what it could be, but I'm getting concerned. The original thoughts were injector, wires, valves.

Any thoughts on this?

Search the forum for 'stethoscope'. It will bring up a number of threads which will give you suggestions on locating the noise, including some improvisational aids like a broom handle or screwdriver if you don't want to spend the $15 or so on a real mechanics stethoscope.

As advanced as internet technology has become, it still hasn't yet given us a way to stand in your shoes across the web and put our ears to the motor to find and ID the noise, you'll have to do some searching...

Actually... he could record it and post it as a wave file. Put the handle of the screwdriver against the microphone and then wrap it in a towel to restrict all unwanted noise. Place the pointy end of the screwdriver against the oil pan at several different location. Any sound being created in the oil pan will be transmitted through the pan sidewall but of course will be quite muffled because of the air-solid-air interface. The screwdriver trick makes it an air-solid-solid, much better.

The mechanics stethescope has an amplifier diaphram to help us humans out.

You miss my point... if he were to go through all that effort, he would find the noise. What I was trying to say is that without him trying to isolate the source of the noise, we can only offer a lot of speculative suggestions as to what the noise might be...

he (rendyx) recently made a video trying to diagnose a problem. His ticking noise is the exact same as mine, from what I could tell. Some time ago, I made a little video of mine and emailed it to some people. One in particular, Nick Chrimes. He said it was most probably NOT rod bearings. He suggested primarily to check the timing chain tensioners. Then to check the valve lash... possibly one way out of spec., or even ejected. However, I had a full 60K done a few months prior.
I have yet to check my timing chain tensioners because I have ran into more immediate problems with my sho. So I still don't know the source.
It only does it intermittantly. But at times, the noise gets very scary. oh_my

Try this out: thumbs_u

http://users.superford.org/rendyx/downloads/ticking.wmv

It's only about 300kb! But the video is not working

Hopefully you can hear the ticking I'm talking about above all of the other noise. I suspect it's the same ticking that used to have no pattern; now it does. This is while running B12 through, oddly enough, but seems like it's from the bottom end (very obviously yesterday).

Note: I am moving around, stopping the camera in between!

Sounds to me like it could be valve noise, although if it is coming from the bottom of the motor that would be unlikely unless you've been driving upside-down.

It's really hard to tell. Did you try the broom handle/screwdriver test yet?

As for valve noise, should I worry/do anything about it?

I did not try the screwdriver test yet, but I will tomorrow, when it is light out and I don't have to work. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!
