in top of my throttle body, it says "Do not clean inside throttle body or adjust hard top screw, special coating on throttle plate and bore.

What exactly does this mean?

The throttle body has been coated to facilitate the smooth flow of air through it, and to prevent the build up of deposits. Cleaning it will (or can) damage the coating.

The top screw is the set screw for the "base set" idle, I think. It should never (ever) need to be tampered with or "adjusted". rangerj

[sarcasm]

It means you should ignore the message, clean the TB and **** with the hard stop screw.

What did you think it meant?

Like rangerj said, there is a non-stick coating in the bore. Cleaning the TB with a solvent will remove the coating. If the coating is removed, the TB will foul rather quickly. My TB also has the coating. It was somewhat dirty when I did my 60K service. I washed it with diluted dish detergent and a very soft cloth.

Gumout makes a product specifically for use in cleaning TB's with that warning that need to be cleaned.

I used carb choke and throttle body cleaner, and sprayed it into the throttle body, while I had the intake tube off. I was just wondering, because people are always talkikng about cleaning the throttle body.

My '97 did get a build up even though I did not use any spray. There is a ridge of carbon that develops behind the TP when it is closed and will result in a sticky TP at the point of opening. I did use carb cleaner to remove it and have not had any problems since in over 50K miles. You can get a Teflon spray that leaves a clear coating of Teflon.

I generally clean up the TB and intake at least once a year. If the coating gets removed in the process not a big deal since it will be cleaned regularly.

GonadsAndStrife:
If nothing sticks to teflon, how do they make teflon stick to the throttle body?
Special super-duper carrier liquids that evaporate in an instant and allow the PFTE to bond.
