thermostat woes

I finally found a warm place to replace the thermostat in the 92. It was suprisingly easy I might add but when I went to replace the thermostat with the replacment I got from napa I noticed the replacement didn't have any jiggle valve on it. After what I've read on here with the valve supposeing to be there I decieded not to put the replacement in. I also trial fitted it in were it goes and it seemed to be loose, like I could move it from side to side a little where its supposed to fit. The theremostat I took out didn't seem to have any wear on it so in it went again. I saw on one post someone mentioned drilling a 3/32? hole around the edge? Any thoughts on this? Am I makeing to big a deal out of this?

Since I wasn't gonna replace the thermostat I thought I'd try the ECT sensor. I couldn't locate it though. The ford manual says its located at the rear of the intake manifold to the rear of the throttle body. It seems like there talkin about were the IAB/ASC sensor dealy is at. If the manifold comes off will I have find it/have better access to it? Also I've just seen a plastic and a metal version of this. Is one better than the other.

I had the same problem when I did mine, Autozone was the only place that I could find that had one with the valve, other than Ford. I don't know about drilling a hole, the jiggler valve seems to serve as a one way check valve so drilling sounds like a bad idea. Either go to Ford or Autozone. As for the ECT, it's back there right below the EGR valve, it should have two wires and have a black connector, I think. You can replace it with the manifold in place, you will need a 1 inch deep well socket I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

STANT sells a 'stat that has been reported to work fine in the SHO. It does not have a "Jiggle" valve.


Refer to this photo of the water outlet assembly:

The ECT is the gray assembly that is screwed into the right side, directly above the date imprint. The temp sender, which has been removed in this photo, screws into the large hole at the lower left.

I drilled a small hole in my NAPA t-stat. It just lets air bleed out and works fine.

I bought the stant for only $12 Canadian and it works mint, would recommend as opposed to the $56 (CAN) OEM one that doesnt even come with the O Ring. A+A+ For Stant

The jiggle valve helps when refillnig the cooling system. It will take much longer without the jiggle valve since the air behind the valve will not be able to escape until the valve opens. The only gasket at the thermostat is the rubber seal around the thermostat's perimeter. If the new valve does not have one, you must transfer the seal from the old 'stat. Do not use any sealant.

Even a small hole drilled in the thermostat will prevent the coolant from heating to the normal temperatures at the rate of a properly working thermostat. The primary mode of failure of the SHO's thermostat is that is does not fully seat, allowing a small trickle of flow when the 'stat is closed.

When you remove the old thermostat, hold it up to the light to see if the seat is completely closed. You will probably find that you can "see the light" through the seat area. Even this can keep the coolant temp below NORMAL in colder temperatures when there is airflow through the radiator.
