Hey all,

I think that my thermostat is stuck open because the car does not heat up very fast and with these cold temperatures the heat guage sits very low on the normal scale when you are travelling on the highway or the like. Do I have to go with the motorcraft one, or will any brand of thermostat do?

I know that the motorcraft one is expensive, but I need one. Is there any other suggstions on other brands that may be a bit cheaper?

I have no problem spending the money, but hey a dollar saved... I just want to know if it is absolutely necessary to buy the motorcraft one, or if others are just as good.

dude, save you r money, go to autozone, pepboys, whoever and buy an aftermarket, the part is 492-192 (for a 3.2 atx) at autozone, im not sure if the number is universal. i just did mine on thanksgiving and ford wanted 27 bucks but it cost me 7 at autozone. aftermarket is better anyway as far as this goes. get a robert shaw if you can find it, otherwise just go to the local store and tell them what you need. changed mine and its as good as the original. goodluck!

Just put a Stant 195 degree one in my 95 ATX, works GREAT! My temp wasn't even getting into the normal anymore.

if you get a non-ford thermostat, be sure to verify that it has the "jiggle valve" which allows a small amount of coolant to go through.

Off to the local parts store I go. I will look for the Stant and a few others. I just did not want to go with an aftermarket thermostat if it wasn't reccomended. I did not want to risk overheating an aluminum motor as a result of a $30 savings.

The Stant does not have the jiggle valve, the RobertShaw does. Either will work.

You will have to either use the old O-ring or buy a new O-ring if you use either of them.

The MTX uses the 180F degree thermostat. Stick with it. The jiggle valve helps to vent the vapor during filling and will greatly improve your ability to properly fill the cooling system.
