Nice setup there Steeda.

Nice to see a Soundtream fan out there. I had a nice setup a few years back in my 1998 Neon R/T...

Clarion Pro Audio head w/ wireless remote (when remote's started to become popular) cant remember the dam nmodel #
Clarion add-on DSP/EQ/crossover unit (DPH-710?)
Clarion 6 disc changer with optical hookup

Front - Soundstream SPL 60 components
Rear - same as front
Subs - 2 Soundstream SPL 12's

Soundtream Balanced Line Driver's for front, rear, and sub channels

and the best part...
Soundstream Picasso 4-channel for the highs...damn i miss this amp (nice and shiny chrome...mmm)

Soundstream Class A 5.0 for the subs, running 1 ohm mono one of the first amps out there at the time to be able to drive a mono load under 1 ohm, stable to 1/2 ohm mono, 1/4 ohm stereo (did I mention chrome?)...damn I miss this amp too

I should have never sold any of that crap. It was so loud, so clean, never distorted, and hit 143 with two twelves in a little neon. Did I say damn I miss these amps... :(

Oh, and all was driven off of the super beefy 83 amp stock Neon's alternator with no problems...WOOHOO (efficient amplifiers kick ****)

I am working on moving back into the whole full blown Audio system thing again. Not really much of a car video person myself, so I will be looking to go back to my roots, and kick it with Soundtream and Clarion Pro Audio once again. A little unorthodox compared to most people's car audio preferences, but that's what I liked and that's what I will go with again. I still have my SPL 12's and am in the process of getting my new clarion pro audio head unit with dsp/eq processor soon (Ebay rules). thumb

Gary, just be careful of the newer Sound Stream stuff. They aren't half as good as they used to be, and their customer service is in the toilet from what I've heard. They were bought out a few years ago, and it was all down hill from there. I believe this was around 2000. I had a Sound Stream Reference 300 back in 98, but I never was able to use it, my speaker combo at the time didn't add up to the correct ohm rating.

I wish I could get my hands on the amps I used to have. That Picasso blew away so many amplifiers in the clarity department. FWIW, I drove the same front and rear speakers off of a Reference 404, and once in a while would hit the tweeter protection on the SPL 60's. I NEVER hit tweeter protection with the Picasso driving them, and it was incredibly louder and cleaner sounding that the 404 (and rated at half the power output (50x4 @ 4 ohms vs. 25X4 on the Picasso). I was impressed. Never blew a tweeter either, and I used to play that system LOUD.

And on that same note, I can attest that the Class A series was extremely more effiecent than the regular Reference series, in terms of power in and power out. I ran the same subs off of a Refernce 700 (needed a 60 amp fuse on that sucker) and then upgraded to the Class A 5.0 (rated 200 watts less and only required a 40 amp fuse). The difference was amazing. The bass seemed so much fuller and played cleaner than the 700. I hit 3 db higher after I switched to the 5.0. Nothing else was changed in the system except the amps. Soundtream Class A amps...efficient, YES. I'm kicking myself right now for getting rid of those bastards...

A couple Picassos and a DaVinci. Ahhhh, that was a wet dream of mine way back. But alas, Soundstream went the way of Lanzar and others who couldn't make the money and got bought out by bigger, inferior companies. All they want now is to use the name with their stuff to make a buck.

I am very partial to Clarion and a/d/s/ but even they have lost some of their luster. For a clear head unit, I would check out the latest and greatest in Eclipse. All the sound quality of a Clarion drx-9255 but with much more in features. With regards to amps, talk to kaotic. He's used some really high end stuff. But for more economical amps, try JL Audio. For speakers, dynaudio. Blah, blah, blah. Buy what sounds good.......and has good warranties.
