I was replacing my TSS last night when I decided to "try" to replace my VSS. Is it my imagination or is this procedure almost in the realm of "impossible" without removal of large portions of the car-oil pan-y pipe. If anyone has advice it would help-Thanks-M

It's not that bad on the MTX but the ATX is a pain. Were you trying to do it from above or below? Which transmission do you have?

The only way to access the vss for replacement on our ATX is from underneath. You have to remove the Y pipe, remove the heat sheild, remove the speedo cable, and then somehow remove the hex screw that mounts the sensor to the trans. If you remove the passenger wheel you can see just see it near the axle input, but it cant be removed there, at best you may be able to twist the heat sheild out of there with a pair of needlenose. I personally surrendered after it took me an hour to find the sensor and remove the heat sheild. Without a lift, torch, alot of patience and small hands replacing it myself didnt justify the 3-3 & 1/2 hours the shop book calls for replacing it. I especially felt that I made the right decision when the very weary looking tech I took mine to told me to never bring my car back again unless I just want an oil or brake change. But he got er done and for around 150.00 plus the price of the sensor. All that being said, if you love a challenge then its a ringer!
How about the TSS did it help any?

I feel the pain-The tss helped quite a bit. I am looking for an updated cpu-I have a 93 atx so I am looking for a 94/95? I think that the vss will have to wait until rod bearing time. BTW-does the vss have anythying to do with my cruise control not working? I checked the cable(it is attached at the throttle body). Any direction would help a lot-

I have seen posts which stated that the cruise will fail when the VSS does, however both times that my VSS failed on my 93 I still had a working cruise. I think the cruise control issue only happens to the MTX's. Check the module (I dont know the name of it offhand) thats just forward and below the brake fluid resevoir, it has a shiny aluminum top, theres a long 8 or 12 pin harness that plugs into it. Make sure its plugged in, clean, and that there is no fluid in where the male and female pins connect. If it is not conected at all make sure there is no signs of damage (melting). A previous owner may have disconnected it because of a common short that we have because brake fluid collects there and causes it to short and blow the brakelight fuse causing the brake interlock to not disengage. I had it happen to mine and in lew of fixing it the right way I just disconnected it. The only things I lost were my cruise and horn. If thats not the problem it may be your multifunction switch in your turn signal stalk.
Thats all I can think of, maybe someone else can chime in with the name of that module and any other possibilities.

I really wouldnt focus too much on the VSS unless you have a code for it,... its driveability issues are not by any means minimal and both times it produced a specific code indicating its failure. If indeed you DO find a code present for the VSS, ALONG w/ the driveability issues, it needs to be replaced soon and immediately or you will wreck your trans fast and permenantly because of the slamming and slipping it produces. Because of its significant labor I wouldnt just throw the part at it. As far as a new CPU goes I have 150,000 on my origional trans and "weak" CPU, but it still holds it own, but I rarely beat on my "old" car anymore. IMO A new CPU is is of little help to a 13 year old trans. with high mileage. If you want those crisp shift points just adding a 94 isnt going to do much but give you a false sense of security about the aging trannys strength and may cause you to push it past its abilities. Absolutely no offense intended, if you want to race your sho then you really should look into a modified rebuilt....quaife!. If thats what youre looking for it would financially be more intelligent to start w/ a MTX...You can probably find one cheaper than a rebuilt trans and they are faster, easier to work on, and the handle the road much tighter than an ATX. Ive had both but had to move and had too much money invested in the ATX to give it away which was unfortunate because the MTX was a killer and rarely gave me the problems the atx has.
Good Luck either way, my ATX is mostly a grocery getter nowadays, but its still nice to have the potential!

OK here's my question ..if the VSS were bad wouldnt it affect the speedo? I would think that since it is the input for the speedo the speedo would not work.

Ok, I'm confused, so pardon my ignorant question...

What is a TSS?

Also, VSS stands for vehicle speed sensor and are mounted on the knuckle above the tone ring on the axle for ABS. Is this the VSS you are talking about?
