When I bought my MKS about two and a half months ago, I noticed the air conditioning wasn't particularly great. it's an October 2009 build date and had about 58000 miles on it. So I gave everything at once over to make sure no broken lines or blockages. Replaced the cabin air filter, packed with crap.
Still no relief with no obvious problems. Take it down to my local repair shop and ask them to check the freon level. They perform an inspection and find no leaks. The freon was down about a little over a quarter of a pound. This gave a slight improvement in the cooling provided.
Still not great on some of the 90-degree days we've had. Then I noticed that the driver side was just slightly warmer than the passenger side air outlets. So I put everything through the paces of checking different temperature and air position settings. I get variations of very hot to cool but not cold air. Air exits all the correct outlets when set. The fan sounds kind of strained so I check the new filter that's only two and a half months old. Almost plugged again. So I start thinking, there's a lot of garbage in the system. The dampers are obviously working but not fully moving. I remove the cover door for the filter and introduced compressed air, both through the filter opening and each of the outlets. No change and no tiny flying pieces of dirt or dust.
So I decided that some sort of hardened dirt was blocking things.
I decided things need to be washed but there's no way I was going to teardown the entire dashboard to try and fix this problem. As it is I happen to have one of those sprayers that you pour the liquid in the top and seal it with a handle that is a air compressor. You pressurize the contents and the spray handle will then atomized high pressure liquid. So I mixed up 50% water 50% simple Green and started the car and ran the heating and air conditioning through all of its ventilation and temperature settings, while spraying the cleaning solution in the empty air filter access hole. I then turned off the system and waited a couple minutes. Then I repeated the same process two more times. Each time I ran through this process the cold air setting became colder and colder. After doing this the air conditioning is working like it should.
I wouldn't recommend anyone else try this but it worked for me. Obviously there hazards trying this, because you could potentially short something out or cause corrosion. I'll post again if I have any issues with what I've done.
Cheers B.
