Way back, almost a year ago I stopped driving my 92 MTX because of a diff pin half-grenading my tranny. I've taken the car out about three times since then to make sure everything still works, and other than some surface rust on the rotors and maybe a noisy gearbox, it's fine. My '85 T-bird quit running tonight and that leaves me with no vehicle to drive except the SHO. My question, which may get me banned for being so half-assed and redneck, is... how can I make this tranny last a little longer before it totally shreds its insides? I know it's lost some fluid and that will need to be replaced. I've also located the hole in the trans (it's on the top at about the 1 o'clock position, if you were looking at the tranny case from the driver's side of the car). I'm thinking I can use some thing like *gulp* JB weld to cover the hole after I add some fluid. I'm doing this in hopes of getting some more mileage out of my car until I get something else fixed.

So, to recap:

How do I fill the tranny to the correct level?

Which fluid/**** should I use to top it off?

Am I totally crazy and stupid to try this?

I would post in the WTB section right away. If you can do it yourself i'd find someone whose got one for sale and buy it up and replace it. maybe 7 hours if you pull the whole subframe. They can be had for $225 and up. You'd be much safer that way and have good transportation.

That's kinda the thing, I'd like to fix the car right, but I've got too many cars around here yway. Not to mention that with school and work right now I really don't have time to pull the car apart. I guess I'll just have to try it and see.

This sounds bad to me. Just sell it to someone who can fix the injured beast. The more time goes on the more SHO's get parted and die, we need to do what we can to make them survive, let it live on to see another day.

Dude, you really should not drive the car. The pin from the diff apparently hasn't fragged the rest of the gears and siezed the tranny up, but the more you drive it, the more likely it is that you're going to catch the car on fire.

Do not stick any type of JB weld or other "liquid" type sealant on the hole. It will get in the tranny further complicating the issue at hand. If you want to stick something over the hole you need something that will mold and stick to the outer tranny case to keep the fluid in. Duct tape won't work, sorry guys.

I personally woudn't opt to drive the car anyway, you'll cause more harm than good, especially if the metal pieces inside (they are there) catch around one of the shafts and sieze it in place. This can cause a fire if it gets hot enough. You run a high risk of catching the car on fire since the fluid will be both inside and outside of the tranny at this point.

Your best bet is to not drive the car, sell it off or get a new tranny. Sorry, but driving the car with a fragged diff does not have a good prognosis.

Alright, you all have convinced me. I'd thought that the worst case scenario was that I'd totally grenade the trannny but I remember now that it could cause a fire as well. It made me think about all the burned out SHO's I see at the junkyard. Looks like I'll leave the SHO parked and post it up for sale soon.

Thanks for making me see the light.

MTX trannies are going for a rather inexpensive price on eBay as of late. Around $200.00 or so with shipping. It's not that hard to swap one out and would give your car a new lease on life. There are also quite a few enthusiasts in your area that might be willing to help you do the work as well. Just a thought.....

Mmm, I'd really love to have the car around for another few hundred odometer clicks, but the township is all over my ass for the excessive amount of cars we have right now. Not to mention that the car hasn't had it's second 60k, if any at all. Besides, that $200 or so should go toward fixing my 'Bird. This car is better left for a more dedicated SHO enthusiast for either a fix-er-up or a parts car.
