Tail light bulbs

ok guys i used the search function and didnt find anything about this although im pretty sure its probably been covered. Anyway I tinted my taillights and they came out a little darker then i wanted but now there isnt really enough light showing through. So have any of you ever bought aftermarket highoutput bulbs if so which ones work. I want the brightest ones possible. Actually the illegal kind is probaby best to make up for the tinted light but i also dont want to melt my taillight lens because they get to hot. I was thinking silverstars?

LED's perhaps?

What about LED's in the tails? Alot of folks strongly advice against it, as they are too bright, but in your case wouldn't hurt with the tints? Or maybe I'm wrong all together. Just a thought.
