I searched the threads 1st but did not find my answer. I P/U full synthetic oil at NAPA for $2.99 a quart. Parts guy said it was valvoline made for NAPA and 5W30. I bought 4 quarts and I also bought 1 quart of full synthetic Lucas oil stabilzer. Anyway Shotimes says you should NOT use synthetic oil in a SHO.
Here is that link:

Being new to the SHO and in 2002 I had Izusu replace my complete engine after 6k miles and I put full synthetic oil catrol in and my engine started leaking oil shortly after. My question is to you long time SHO owners what is yout opinion on full synthetic oil and lucas oil stabilizer in a 1990 SHO

I like synthetic oil..feels alot smoother than the regular stuff...BUT with older engines comes oil leaks..if your car leaks regular oil it will leak worse with the Full synthetic. I use any Mobile 1 in my SHO..Royal Purple is the S*!T, but havnt ran it in my SHO. Pretty much what I am saying is any oil is fine, its all owners preference.

The SHOtimes article is coming from the angle of increased cam wear w/ synthetics due to believing their lower viscosity when cold would make them drain off the cam lobes and lifters more than regular oil. In practice, I don't find this to be the case at all.

I have used Mobil 1 in my red 94 since 94, and have no issues. I have used Mobil 1 in several other vehicles with no issues. However, I would not use it in a vehicle that burns or leaks oil just due to the increased expense involved.

I think the NAPA synthetic at $2.99/qt is a screaming deal, and would not hesitate to use it.

However, I would throw the Lucas in the trash and never waste my money on it again. All oils have a very delicate balance of additives to make them perform as designed. Adding a wild card like Lucas has more potential to lower the effectiveness of the oil than it does to raise it, and today's oils are so much better than oil of even 20 years ago, there is no reason to screw with additives like that.

I completely agree with you rubydist. Oils are much better now and the additive packages have been well researched to perform without adding any magic potions.
