I think everyone would agree with me when I say I do not want to spend 1 more penny than I have to on my SHO's. FF's are not the best paid proffession in the world, and now I have a wife to support. But I have to look at the big picture. ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE can turbo their SHO for CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. That is not under dispute here. The point I am trying to make (and have been for years) is that RELIABLE speed costs money. To do it RIGHT costs money. And if something is worth doing, it is worth doing right. My time is as precious to me as my money.
That said, I throw the gauntlet down. A true FI SHO challenge. If ANYONE can get a reliable $430whp out of their turbo SHO on the cheap, THEN DO IT! As it stands, of the 4 known dyno runs I have seen by turbo SHO's, ALL were from MY car. If someone duplicated my system down to the last vacuum line, parts alone are WAY WAY over your $2000 mark. Sure, get used parts (FWIW I would not touch an Ebay turbo with a 10ft pole, just too many variables, and the turbo is the core of the system, and they are not expensive NEW, with a warranty), pass on the Tweecer, wideband, gauges, and other supporting mods, and you could save some dough, but your system will suffer for it.
Then, add on all the supporting mods, and you are looking at some serious change. No 300+whp SHO should be running around on stock MAF, injectors, fuel pump, diff, clutch, brakes or suspension. And no FI SHO should leave the garage without a full complement of gauges. So yes, no one is disputing that you can turbo ANY car on the cheap. It is done every day. But I wanted more than a scrapped together wham bam TYM SHO. I wanted a complete package, on that stops and turns like it goes. I have that. And you can not duplicate that without dropping some cash. And I will still have a wonderfully running, EXTREMELY powerful turbo SHO years from now, with another 50k miles of trouble free enjoyment under its belt. And for that, I am willing to pay the admission price. Don't bemoan me because of that.
So please, one and all, build your turbo SHO's. Dyno them. Then drive them across the country in July to the Convention. Drag it, track it, AutoX it (and while you are at it drive in the most clutch hating city in the world - SF Cali), then drive it back across the country in July. If ANYONE does it with more HP and on the cheap, you can drive my car home to. Simple as that.
