I knew the switch was starting to go. Just didn't feel right. Well it broke with the sunroof in the up position. While I try to find a replacement, or decided to do the mod with another switch, I need help getting the sunroof down. I am not good with electronics, but looking for a way to 'jump' the switch to send the signal to close the roof. Going to be parking the SHO for the winter soon and need the roof to be down. Can anyone tell me what pins to jump on the back of the switch to close the sunroof?

Thanks,

You can close the sunroof manually by removing the motor. You’ll see the mechanism that does the work.

The motor still works and removing it seems like more work than jumping the pins, but if no solution by the time I need to store the SHO, that is an option.

Thx

Sorry, I want to be sure I get this right. So the picture you have above, in that orientation, if I numbered the pins from 1 - 10 from top left, across to the right and move down, left to right, from your picture, I 'short' pin #1 with pin #2 and short #6 with #7? Does that makes sense?

You might spray the switch out with electrical contact cleaner, but a can is the cost of a new switch.

The switch itself has two separate rows of three pins each, which poke through the circuit board. Like two switches in one. DPDT.

The center two pins are the "output" to the motor, (within the console, colored yellow/black and yellow/red). The (left) switch pins have the red power and black ground wires.

In the "close" position, the two center and the left contacts are connected, sending power and ground to the wires that are directly adjacent. In the "open" position on the right, instead the circuit board reverses the + and -, sending reversed power to the motor wires (actually to the moonroof relay, which has a position limiter).

Thanks for your help, but when I connect the top two pins, from the picture, I just get sparking and the interior lights dim. From the picture, with the purple lines, it looks like you are connecting the all black wire pin with the Yellow/Red pin just to the right of it, as soon as I connect them, I get sparking and I have not even tried to connect the other pins yet. I tried to do them both at the same time, and I just get sparking from the top two pins. I am not sure I am fully understanding your description, but thanks for trying.

P.S. I tried electrical contact cleaner and sprayed the crap out of the switch, but nothing.

P.P.S. I have a few spare window switches, so I am wondering if there is a way to use a window switch just to get the roof closed. The window switch is original and it has a total of 7 pins. Any way I can use this?

Here, I've numbered the switch pins and traces on the board:

KXQVpHF

Pin 1: Ground (black wire)
Pin 2: Motor out (Yellow/Red wire) = +12v: close
Pin 3: +12 V (thru trace)

Pin 4: +12V (red wire)
Pin 5: Motor out (Yellow/Black wire) = +12v: open
Pin 6: Ground (through trace on opposite side?)

Connecting 1-2 and 4-5 should be the "open the moonroof" position. Connecting 2-3 and 5-6 should be the "close the moonroof". That's what the switch does.

If you get spark as soon as you connect only 1-2 yourself, it may be that the insides of the switch has malfunctioned, stuck in the "2-3" position. Try shorting together just the 5-6 pins and see if the sunroof closes (or opens). Otherwise, there could be a wiring fault.

(If you unplug the switch at the harness connector, you can test the switch with a multimeter in the "ohms" position - though I doubt you have one, as a multimeter owner would also recognize how this kind of switch functions.)

If the switch is internally messed up and shorted, you'll need to unplug the console switch at the connector, and instead jumper harness pins/wires at the connector. There, the colors are different:
- At the harness, jumper black to yellow/red stripe, and then jumper light blue/black to red/yellow. That should close the moonroof.
- If instead it opens the moonroof (or does nothing), jumper black to red/yellow, and jumper lightblue/black to yellow/red.

If this procedure also makes sparks when just one of the two pairs are connected, you have a wiring fault (or possibly a fault in the relay module).

It may be possible to pry out the button from the front of the switch body, spreading the sides of the switch, and get all the little metal parts cleaned and re-assembled properly, but that would also take experience with rebuilding this kind of switch.

edit: (cleaned up post)

NoSlo, This write up is amazing. So bridging pin 2-3 on the switch did nothing. Bridging pins 5-6 on the switch sparked, so I am going on the assumption the switch is shorting inside, so I disconnected the harness and bridged black to yellow/red stripe, and then bridged light blue/black to red/yellow and the sun roof closed!!! The sound was so sweet, the thunk of the roof and the 'yes' that I whispered under my breath. Now I can order the switch from Napa and do the mod over the winter and can store the SHO properly. THANKS!!!!

Here's how to install a NAPA switch http://www.angelfire.com/home/SH0ckforce/Modifications/MoonRoofSwitch/index.html

Thanks for the link to the switch swap! My switch is almost certainly going to break free from the console again one of the next times I go to use it. I have a spare console so I can get this prepped and ready.

You can also scratch up (gouge really) the inside plastic to prepare the surface (along with acetone) and just cover the sides of the switch in plastic epoxy.

This write-up was incredibly helpful in diagnosing a bad motor and building a new switch. THANK YOU.
