Has anyone had a problem with your car suddenly accelerating when coming to a stop? This has happened three times so far. The engine revs to about 4 grand. I had to shut it down because the brakes wouldn't hold it. My mechanic can't find the problem and it hasn't happened to him while he's been driving it. Luckily, he doesn't charge me for diagnostics! There isn't anything in the computer trouble codes and the car runs great otherwise.

is it manual or auto. if it downshifts and the throttle sticks then there ya go. if not, maybe something is causing it to open suddenly....

It's an automatic. The car idles down properlywhen I come to a stop. Then it suddenly takes off.

What happens if you just slightly depress the accelerator when this is happening. does it come come right down?

The first time it did. The other times it revved up so high, I just shut it down.

Is there any chance that the corner of your foot is catching the accelerator petal? Happened to me once, the harder I pressed on the brake, the higher the engine went.

Well, I'm thinking that maybe your TPSensor is bad. If the rpms came down with the slight movement on the throttle would make me belive that the TPSensor is tell is telling the computer wrong throttle information. Man its kinda hard to diagnos it from here.

BILLH does have a point also.

I didn't have my feet near the gas peddle.
The car idles down completly when I come to a stop. Then it suddenly accelerates. I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem. It must be unique to my sho. Thanks for any input. Is there a site to search for bulletins or recalls from Ford?

Have you done any throttle work recently? I know the 3.8 Taurus is different, but on my old bull I had taken off the TB for some intake cleaning and when I reinstalled the linkage back to the TB I noticed I had lost cruise control. Sometime later on the freeway I just started accelerating for no reason at 80mph, went up to 110, very scarey as the freeway was packed with people and I must have appeared like an ass flashing people to pass, I finally got the idea to drop to neutral, but the engine just revved to the limiter. Turned out when I put the TB back the linkage had snagged a bit and was pulling on the TB on its own
