Mine were plug and play, but I thought I'd read that Kurt Metros had to modify his to fit. :shrug:

You can and that's the way I have it right now, but the proper way to get the best fitment is to use the housing off the gen two.

Housing not sure is the proper word as my English is not the best, it's the part that holds the mirror and connects to the door.

The housing on gen one has a sharp rounded edge towards the front and its a tad larger covers my chrome trim a little bit.

See the pic on the lower part of the chrome trim the housing is overlapping a little.
