Steering wheel wear??

Has anyone had an issue with their steering wheel "fraying" or coming apart? I had 22,000 miles and had to have Ford replace my wheel last Tuesday. I get in the car this weekend, and it has began looking like "gills" on the lower portion of the brand new steering wheel, right at the 5:00 spot.

I never hold the wheel there, don't use any harsh chemicals, and hadn't even had my car detailed since then. I have tried calling my service writer again but haven't been able to speak with him. Unbelievable how less than 100 miles and it's happened again. My '97 SHO which I got to see again this past weekend doesn't even show signs of wear. WTH?

Thanks Kev, and I also looked at some old pics of that car when I got it from Doug and it still looked fine. What made ya change it?

Indentions on it from a steering wheel cover, and some wear spots.
