Does anyone have a part number for or know the name to ask for at the parts counter for the slip joint on the steering shaft? My wheel has way to much play and ive tightened everything in sight.

The parts counter guy will be able to pull up an illustrated parts diagram with everything labeled. Just tell him you need to look at the steering column assembly. My local dealers have been good about printing a hard copy of the diagram.

On my 89, I had to shim the slip joint with some aluminum to relieve the looseness in the joint.

Be advised that this joint is a critical safety element both in steering and in the collapsing of the steering column in an accident to reduce head and chest injuries for the driver. Work on it at your own risk.

I tried shimming also, which worked okay until I hit a large pothole, which jarred the subframe enough (old bushings) to compress the telescoping joint and eject the shims. Subsequently, I installed a steel collar w/ set screw over the outside of the telescoping shaft. Tightening the set screw compressed the outer shaft into the inner shaft, taking up the slop in the joint. Has worked great for about 2 years now.

IIRC, those joints are around $120 new.
