I just need a little clarifacation on the different racks. What is variable assist? and What is the difference between a SHO rack and a regular one? Thanks!

Variable assist is when there is a solenoid in the power steering lines to either deliver more or less boost depending on the speed. For example, low speeds you would need full boost to park and such, higher speeds would give less boost to enable you to "feel" the turns better.

Not sure what the difference is, but I am willing to bet that the SHO racks have VAPS (variable assist power steering) and the regular ones do not. I think some 3.8's came with VAPS also, not sure though. Maybe someone with more knowledge than I have can chime in.

The difference is one port. You can plug the Vaps racks' port and have a non-Vaps rack... IIRC....

Try a search on Steering Racks, there was a recent thread covering ALL of this. :thumb:

i believe your right, i read somewere that you can put in a cheaper standard rack. i have my vaps computer unpluged, actually it came like that, i am going to flush it completly and plug it back in and see what this issue was, if there was one, when i switched out my transmission, it had a reman sticker on the rack, wonder if the computer was unplugged for the previous rack and for some reason never got plugged in.
