Steering noise

92 sho 5sp, Sometimes this steering system makes a horrible grinding noise which does not seem to affect the way it steers much, most of the time there is no noise at all, would this be a bad rack or bad pump?

Under what conditions are you experiencing this noise.

Do you also feel any vibration through the column or the car body?
