anyone got a diagram of how the ignition system works in the steering column , i recently replaced the ignition key system and the ignition box , and the car wont shut off? it starts fine , however it will not shut off. the only thing i can think of is replacing the entire column? the key system turns way too easy , no clicking - just spins. so if someone could supply a diagram of how the ignition system works inside the column , that would be great. however i think the inside of the column of the ignition system is screwed up. heck i dunno? im running out of options. or any other ideas out there? thank you. i hope i made sense. im just frustrated

By Replacing the column? I have the same problem on a SLO taurus where there is little to no resistance on the ignition switch and lock cylinder assembly and I was looking at taking the column apart vs. getting a used one. How much did a used one run you?

There are two plastic "ignition lock actuators", one of which has a short steel pin that translates the rotary movement of the ignition lock into the forward/aft movement that controls the "ignition switch" in the column. Over time the pin will work loose and fall out - and in my case resulted in being able to start the motor, but not shut it off.

The stealership wanted $250 labor and parts (which I can get for ~$20) - minimum 3-day repair time. A local shop charged $60 to install my parts (I [then] didn't have time to do the repair myself).

The column has to be removed from the vehicle, and partially disassembled to change either actuator lever - so most shops are going to "quote" a cheaper price, primarily out of laziness . . . .

  1. drive to junkyard

  2. spend 5 minutes to find any Taurus/Sable that has a column

  3. spend 5-8 minutes to drop the column

  4. spend 15 minutes to install a junkyard column with used parts that could fail tomorrow . . . .

It took a little more than 2 hours to install new parts . . . .
