I was wondering if there are any other cars with the same rear calipers as the SHO. i dont really want to spend the money on new ones, since i have 150k on my car, but mine are shot, so any suggestions?

You can get calipers from auto parts stores or from FPN or SHO Nut. I'd suggest getting new ones...at 150k your car is just broken in, lots of life yet in her. wink

Where in MI are you?

Actually I've been researching this too! Apparently the wreckers and Ford say that from 93 up the rears are the same as any Taurus/Sable and even the 96's I believe. Call your local wrecker and ask. I was trying to find the bracket and pins because it seems us Canadians have no option but to get those from Ford (very expensive). Even if you buy aftermarket calipers you do not get these parts. Are there any Canadians out there that know where we can buy the bracket kits?
Good Luck

Hey Jayman, I got new bracket and pins from Autozone for $20 US. Are there any Autozones in Canada? If not, do you know someone that may be able to hook you up?

Ask the parts guy if the calipers are cheaper for a Thunderbird of the same year. Cause guess what? They're the same. They think just because it's a SHO which is kinda rare, they can up the list price.

Yah, unfortunately we don't, but that's a thought about knowing someone.
93EmeraldMTX did you check out your local junkyard? You can get them to order you west coast calipers (used) that will have little or no corrosion. I guess it depends on what you are prepared to spend.

Good Luck and thanks jelloslug!!!

on that note, this is to anyone who buys front calipers from Auto-Zone....when they ask if it has the police package, say yes(they are Fenco C313/C314). all SHOs came with the calipers used on the cop cars, regardless if the SHo was designated for police use or not. how did i find out ? the calipers i got were for a regular Taurus....and when doing 80 MPH exiting the highway, i couldnt stop.

Actually, the base calipers are the same on all '94-'99 Tauruses (including SHO's), Sables, and Continentals. The difference is the piston. From the factory, base Taurus & Sable calipers came with a phenolic piston, whereas the SHO's, LX's, SE's, police packages and Conti's came with steel pistons. Most remanufacturers use steel pistons if a new piston is required during rebuilding.

Regardless of the P/N, the only way to know for sure that you get the right piston is to open up the box & check before leaving the store.

Any Gen 3 Taurus/Sable with rear disc are the same as the Gen 2 & 3 SHO.

same calipers, yes. but the braking system (proportioning valve/master cylinder) have different qualities. yes, the standard Taurus calipers will work but you WONT BE ABLE TO STOP. when heavy braking from 80 MPH, i had both feet on the pedal pushing with all i had and just barely got stopped, and my ABS never kicked in.

both calipers had steel pistons. the one for the regular Taurus has a smaller inside diameter, requiring diff pads (in this case PFC 4214). the pads for the SHO are PFC 4214S.

Ford does this a lot with thier vehicles... and you will find that a lot of aftermarket rebuilders use steel replacements for phenolic pistons in calipers that OE had pheonlic pistons...i GUARANTEE you that the design difference in the calipers is the piston and that OE they were phenolic on certain base model taurii... as i said Ford does this on many different vehicles.... other than the ones already stated the crown victoria is another example... if you look at the brake pad part numbers.... (NOT Performance Friction numbers) MKD421 is the number for the regular taurus brake pads... which is SPECIFICALLY for phenolic piston calipers and you will find it listed that way in every brake catalog from bendix to wagner... and MKD421A is the number for the SHO and or police package which SPECIFICALLY is for steel piston calipers which are bigger ID pistons... same is true of many Ford brake pad sets... can't remember the numbers off the top of my head. This is something we should be wary about on our SHOs

I was only addressing the calipers which is what 93EmeraldATX asked about, not the rest of the braking system.

Put the calipers from any flavor Taurus or Sable side-by-side ('94-'99 for fronts, '93-'99 for rears). Look at the casting codes on the calipers -- they are the same! Like I said, the only difference can be the pistons.

Now, noticing that you have a Gen I, this may not apply -- it's been nearly 10 years since I worked on a Gen 1 SHO. In any case, the information I gave him with regards to his Gen II are 100% accurate.

I got calipers for the rear form autozone for 35 dollars a piece with a 70 dollar core charge. Not too expensive IMO.
