Ok... well my coil has a dead spot and won't turn over... well it did after I let it roll a few times, and let the clutch out.. (turn flywheel... turn starter..) and then she took off... so anyway... I gotta get another one in here...

So I have the one from my 93 auto and it looks identical.... then I go to advance auto they have the same part number. But autozone has different numbers.

So whats the deal.. is it the same or different? I'm assuming the gearing may be different? Different number of teeth on the auto flywheel as opposed to the mtx? Maybe the shaft comes out further when it engages? Anyone know whats up? Cause I wanna slap it on and see what happens...

interesting , check rockauto if they have same numbers. Rockauto are rarely wrong in their parts interchangability (sp?).

All starters bolt up to all SHOs, but there's some differences in the connections between years. Gen 1 (maybe just 89's or 89-90s?) had the solonoid on the fender instead of on the starter, and later model Gen 2 had a different connector, plus a smaller case design.

nah nah.. its all incorporated in the "starter" itself as a unit. Nothing is different... I think that my "starter wire" is a spade type connector on the 92, and this one bolts... maybe I'm just remembering wrong... time will tell..

All gen 2 starters are completely interchangeable. MTX, ATX, doesn't matter. There are subtle differences (mainly tooth count and s-terminal connector on the solenoid), but again, they don't really matter.

It'll work.

I think the different tooth count spins the engine at a different speed?

Yep... I kinda came to that when I seen it had 2 less teeth.... figured it would spin it a little faster and.. it does.. but works fine.. :)

You don't think tooth count would make a difference? Not doubting ya... just curious...
It technically makes a difference, but on 99.999% of V6 SHO's nobody would ever notice one.

There is actually a TSB out there somewhere regarding the 12-tooth drive solving some hard-starting problems with certain PCM calibrations, but I'd be willing to bet that a majority of SHO's are running a 9-tooth starter.

Well, I can say that faster speed appears to make it start a little easier / sooner than before.. maybe 1/2 of a second turn to start is all I need... kinda just like "bumping" it when you want to take the crank bolt off.

I know the one I had was origional... had it rebuilt years ago... somewhere around 2000, and the 93 had a Napa reman.. so its hard to say what it had from the factory. I will say my car was a little moody, or "millenium falconish" when it came to starting, but its just something I grew accustomed to. If it didn't start after a second or two.. I usually had to floor the gas pedal and let it crank over 6-8 times before it would catch. Haven't had that issue with this new starter... seems it turns the motor over a little faster to the point where it will catch easier...

Maybe its the teeth, or maybe its the fact that the new starter I have has a new coil in it maybe? I know my coil in the old one was OE, so maybe it was just old, and not getting enough of a push from the magents to spin fast enough. I can hear the difference in how "tight" that electric motor is... and I know that has to account for something too.

I've swapped different year starters before. No problems, just the terminal may be a flat spade or a hoop.

I've swapped between the 9 and 12 tooth starters on the Pumpkin and couldn't tell any difference.
