Ok this problem is getting worse every day. When I push the clutch in and press the brake to start the car, all I get is a click. (like a dead battery click, but everything inside has full power) I turn the key back, and try again. Sometimes it takes a few times, then it starts. Or if I hold it after the click for a couple seconds, it will go. What is the deal? Bad starter solenoid or what?
Thanks.

Sounds like the solenoid.

Fortunately, the solenoid for an 89 is less than 10 bucks at most auto parts stores and only takes 5 minutes to replace.

Your starter motor probably has worn out brushes, and they dont always make good enough contact to turn the motor. It could also be the solenoid not making proper contact to turn the starter. On your Gen 1 the solenoid is separate, and relatively inexpensive, so try that first. If that doesnt fix it then the starter motor is bad, and you can have that tested at any Autozone, Advance, etc.

If you hear a click this is the solenoid pulling in the contacts. So you know it is good. Though it may have burnt contacts. More than likely the battery cable going to the starter is not good in some way or the brushes as said above.
