Hello to all,
I've been lurking for a few years and have been helped countless times using
your search button. But this time I'm stumped. Recently, I bought a 93 ATX
105000 miles. I wanted to do a front 60k on it. It will be my second time doing a 60k.
So, when I was doing the starter bump, my ratchet lifted the motor a good
2 or 3 inches then came crashing down. Worse than that, the crank bolt was still tight. I probably should've strapped the motor down for the next attempt, but I didn't think of that till just now. 5 or 6 bumps later I have a no crank situation.
Starter connections are good. As is the battery. I get a clicking when I turn
to start, but it's coming from a little black box right next to the ABS computer.
About ! inch square, 5 wires. Can this relay(?) be causing my problem?
CEL stays lit with key turned to start. Can anyone tell me how to test for
power to PCM, DIS, NSS if necessary?
Would strapping down the motor for a starter bump help to preserve motor mounts?
Thank you,
Tom

Sounds like the rear motor mount is already cooked. Starter bumping shuold not hurt a healthy mount.

As for the no crank...sounds like you might have killed the starter. When you get it cranking again, use a breaker bar, not a ratchet. Ratchets have a tendancy to skip teeth under impact like that...ruining the ratchet and getting you no where.

Try tapping the starter with a hammer and cranking again. Don't let the engine come up like that, though, it'll take all the oomph out of the starter bump. If you have to strap it down or replace rear roll damper, do it.

Thank you 93rev2sev. I suspected the same about the starter. Switched it with the one out of my 95 mtx. Result- 95 runs, 93 checks out on DMM but no crank. I probably should've mentioned that at first.

Update: While investigating the ignition switch, battery was disconnected. I turned the key to ON to get the tumbler out. All the dash lights came on. I was so surprised, I left the key ON and went to investigate the battery. Neg. cable had found it's way back to connect the neg. post. When I pulled it away, there was a loud CLICK. Probably from the starter this time. Put neg. cable back on and tried it. Started right up. That black box (relay?) that was clicking before has nothing to do with starting the car, as it was disconnected at the time.
On to the 60k!!!
Thanks and have a great day
