I have a 95 ATX, and sometimes (not all the time) it will spit and sputter when I am trying to accellerate. It's like it has no power at all and is missing like crazy...then if I hammer down on the throttle it will come out of it and accelerate like normal???? Anyone have any suggestions?

I am also having a problem with the tranny. In first gear, if you accelerate normally then let off the gas quickly, there is a loud knock (like it forced itself into second). It only does this in first gear. If you drive it like normal with steady acceleration through all the gears...it shifts fine, it's only when I let off in first. Any advice is appreciated!

:thankyou:

I just bought the car. It spent the last three years running only a few miles a week. I just put a new water pump, upper idler pulley and lower idler pulley on it. Other than that I changed oil, ran some lucas "anti wear" through the tranny and added a bottle of fuel system cleaner. The tranny feels a little better since I added that. That's about it so far.

Plugs and wires.

Clean the MAF (search this forum for proper procedure)

Check back.

If you give it hard throttle in first and let off before it shifts, the pressures are still high in the trans. so naturally its going to bang into second. But if it is truly normal throttle it may have something to do with the spitting and sputtering

In addition to possibly being plugs and wires (which likely need changed anyway) you have all of these possibilities: (these are listed in order of likelihood, in my experience)
oil in plug wells (then it needs new valve cover gaskets + plugs and wires)
sick tps
sick mafs
sick coil pack
sick dis
sick pcm

Sometimes, there will be codes to help you diagnose, other times there will not.
