All the sudden my speedo dropped to zero while on the highway (including trip/odo). All other gauges work. Is this a broken cable, or are the instruments electronic? How hard is this to fix? Please don't tell me the whole dash has to come out to get to it!!

I had that happen when I was changing out my face gauges. The speedo no workeee...
Anyway, I found that there are actually 2 speedo cables. A short one that goes from the speedometer out through the firewall and meets in a junction, don't know what the real term is, where it hooks up with the lower cable. The junction is between the engine and the firewall and you can see it from the drivers side of the car. It runs vertial and the short speedo cable goes into the top of it and obviously the lower one comes out of the bottom. The lower cable goes to the wheels.
I found that my upper cable had come loose from the junction, and hooked it back up and it works fine.

I'm not an expert, but that's what happened to me.
There are many REAL experts in this forum, hope my mishap helps!

Well I'm not sure if your speedometer head failed or your cable. Check to see if the cable didn't come apart in the engine bay, you'll see the two cables joined together right below the master cylinder, maybe a little towards the passenger side, there will be a c-clip holding them together. Or the lower cable may have popped out of your tranny, if you have an ATX, good luck. With an MTX, you can put your hand down and feel if the cable popped out. If that checks good, pull your cluster out and take a drive to see if the speedo cable core is spinning inside the speedometer cable. If so, it is pointing to the speedometer head.

rfiltz, what year SHO do you have? Trans type? This info helps us to help you.

The Gen 1 and 2 used a mechanical cable connection, where the Gen 3 were electronicly controlled from the ABS system.

Oops! I have a '92 MTX and if I'm looking right, it seems the cables inside the engine compartment look OK. I can hear a faint "tick-tick" sound while driving, so I assume that's the busted speedo or cable at the housing. Do you have to pull the entire dash to get at the instruments?
