Howdy,

I still haven't solved my spare tire issue in my 2016 SHO with PP. I know the 17" spare/temporary tire from a regular Taurus doesn't fit. Can anyone tell me if an 18" temporary spare from an Explorer does? I have heard rumor of this. If not, does anyone know if a full size 18" wheel and tire from a Police Interceptor Sedan might work? I've heard discussion that an odd size wheel can't go on the back, but how about the front? Any input would be appreciated. Kevin

With the SHO being AWD it is recommended that tires be the same diameter. If you can find a tire/rim set up that is close and bolts up then it is your discretion. Where in AZ do you live? Here in PHX I have never even thought twice about having a spare. However I do have roadside assistance, so that would help.

I'm down in Tucson and never worried about a spare until I got a flat on I-10 and had to get towed in to Discount Tire in Casa Grande while on my way to Phoenix. So, I basically am only concerned when taking it on vacation and getting a flat in the middle of no where. Locally, I'm not worried, it would just be something to throw in the trunk if going on a trip to Vegas, San Diego, etc.

I would suspect that the 18" Explorer mini spare is probably the same that is in the non-PP SHO. Rolling diameter isn't an issue if you use what the factory provided in other AWD vehicles.

Performance Spare had one for my car, so I just bought the kit, but I only carry it on trips outside of my home area.

Hi Ron,

I bought a spare out of a 2013 Taurus from a salvage yard, and when I got the flat above, is when I learned that the 17" temporary hits the calipers when you move. A fun lesson to learn in Arizona in the summer :(

Can any non PP owners give me the specs of their temporary spare tire??

Finally Ron, I'm seriously considering coming to my first convention in Nashville, thus why I am trying to solve this problem if I am going to drive cross county from AZ to Nashville :)

I've got a '14 Explorer with the 18" spare and plan to try it out when the SHO comes out for the summer. I know 18" is enough diameter-wise but I'm concerned the dish of the rim may still cause it to hit the calipers, at least in the front.

That does make sense about the rolling diameter though. If Ford gives me a 27" spare for my AWD Explorer with 29.5" tires, then why wouldn't a 27" spare work with my AWD Taurus with 28.5" tires? I would think that the AWD systems between the two platforms are very similar, if not identical, so if a 2.5" difference is acceptable for the Explorer then why wouldn't a 1.5" difference be okay for the Taurus . . .

It's just funny because in reading other threads on this topic, it's almost unanimous that using a spare that is any more the 3% different that stock diameter will cause bad things to happen.

Can you give me the specifics on the spare that you have for the Explorer?

Awesome! Should be a good road trip. There's a couple of guys coming out of Texas: Kerby and Mike Murphy, so there could be a possibility of a caravan for you.

I can tell you it's a 165 70 18 tire with a 27" diameter, but that's about it. What other info are you looking for?
I think that's all I need to match it up at a Salvage yard out here from an Explorer. Thanks for the help!

Should be the same as pp, nothing different on inner mounting size between the 2

Thanks so much, it gives me a good starting point, just got to hope the calipers for the pp don't interfere. I don't even know if the calipers are different or just different pads. I assume they are different but hopefully this spare will fit if I can find one. Much appreciate the help!

I run stock 18" stock Taurus wheels with winter tires on my wife's 2010 PP with no clearance issues.
Thanks, I'm just trying to find out if the 18" temporary spare for non pp, will fit pp. But this still helps if it doesn't.

I don't know if this helps but, I run the p i 18in steel rims with the 13 + s h o brake upgrade. Haven't had any problems.
