When I start my 92 mtx when it's cold I get an odd sound. The sound is almost like an ice maker, or a grinding sound. The sound continues for about one minute, then I notice the motor "blipping" slightly, the tach will bounce, come back, bounce come back... Like something's catching. Then the noise will subside completly and it will be idling smoothly. Also, the "Lamp Out" light comes on if I push in the clutch while it is making this sound. The noise's pitch is slightly altered when I push in the clutch also. I just replaced the secondary vacuum controller and the IAC, FYI. I've searched the forum and have never seen this particular problem mentioned. Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.

as for the gringing sound... some Lucas oil stabalizer should quieten things down. It did for me.
Don't know about all the other symptoms.
Sorry. Good luck thumbs_u

When you say "blipping" do you mean dying to zero and then coming back? If so, you probably need a Cam Position Sensor my friend. Not too bad to get to, and not very expensive either.

My car sounds "dry" until it picks up oil, no more than 2 or 3 seconds. She's got 202K and still kicking.

The grinding is definitely not internal. I just completed a full 60k ~5k miles ago. Oops, I read that quick and thought it said "Crankshaft position sensor" Well it's not going all the way to zero, just slight fluctiations in rpm that go along with the sound changing in pitch. It's like something's sticking, I am not sure what could stick that would make the revs go down.

my mtx tranny made a ice maker noise and when I pushed my clutch in it would stop, does yours? If so it's more then likely your throw-out bearing, and if it is your in for a suprise, it took me 13 hours to put in a new clutch package, flywheel, starter, rear main seal, over sized throw out bearing and a sleeve on the output shaft on my tranny.
well I hope it's not your throw out bearing....
good luck man boink

Well the plot thickens, I'm sure it is in need of a full clutch job, tob, pressure plate, all wear items, etc... I'm fully prepared to do that job. I'm hoping I will find the cause of this annoyance once I tackle it. I was just thinking if anyone had experienced this and it wasn't related to clutch-area internals, I could stop it asap.

My 94 ATX makes a terrible Ice-Maker sound on cold mornings. It turned out to be water collecting in the power antenna that gets crunched when the car first starts. With all that ice it takes the antenna about 30 seconds to fully extend. I hope this is your problem and not a tranny related problem. Good luck,

Tom
