Cars is in shop, they replaced chain tensioner which was very loose, this morning car was started and it made sound coming from the intake, it is definatly not a rod bearing, sound comes and goes. sounds like a marble rattling around in the intake.does anyone have any idea of what it can be?

A bolt or socket in the intake? It doesn't take very long to get the manifold off, so you might as well.

I do not think it is that, car was making the noise before it went into the shop.
when they opened it up they said the chain tensioner was shot, they replaced it, but its making the same exact sound.

There is a lot of room underneath the intake between the heads where some kind of small peice of metal could have fallen. Could take off the intake and drag a magnet through there, and if it doesn't pick anything up, you might want to take off the heads for a better look. Or incase the piece is not metal.

I was not descriptive enough, alittle backround on when and how this started. car had been making a slight ticking sound for about a month, about a week ago, the car started to make a louder ticking sound at about 2k rpm. while driving home oil light flashed for a second about 2 blocks from my house, slowing down to a stop sign the car died, i started the car and i heard a loud ticking sound. i had the car towed to my friends shop, he has been working on my sho's since i bought my first in 93. This car is a 94 mtx. he replaced the tensioner then calls me this morning asking me to come to the forums and see if anyone has any idea, that the car sounds as if a marble is rattling around, he said its so bad that he does not want to move it, i asked if the rod bearing was gone, he said he has never heard a rod bearing make this sound. that the sound comes and goes. he swears its the same sound the car made when i took it in to him. he is trying to save me a few bucks by trying to get some ideas from people who work on the cars alot. instead of just tearing it apart and searching. they are also very busy and i am sure he does not want to spend time searching for the problem when he has other things he can be doing.

Oil pressure light and then it died. Now you have a noise.

Drop the oil pan, and look for your bearing bits. Sounds like you spun one, even if your friend thinks not.

Edit: Quit trying to start it, you may still be able to save it.

My engine doesn’t make any rod bearing noise, but sometimes, the rpms have dropped to below 500 and the oil light went on. Are my bearings going?

The oil pressure light will come on when it sees 6psi or less. Bogging the motor like that is not good for it. And the low RPM's will make the oil pressure lower. Is it for sure your bearings, no. If you have over 100k, you need to change them. I had a customer with the same symptoms that you describe, almost stall the motor and the oil light comes on. I replaced the rod bearings and that issue went away.

Sounds like rod bearings to me, Kuda. They fool everybody. Change them and hope its not too late.

Then again everyones so quick to throw that out.

Take your upper timing cover off and check your belt tensioner.

yea, everyone is so quick to throw that out because they know how common and damaging it can be. and by furthing looking into other things first, he may end up destroying his entire engine. its not that hard to change em. really should be the next thing you do before you even try to start the engine again.

Well... Usually when you hear noise from the top side of the motor its usually something faulty on the top side of the motor. Out of 10 or so SHO's Ive owned, and about 15 Ive put my hands on (god forbid) I see more tensioners go bad than I see rod bearings go bad. If you have a 100K + mile car, and the motor hasnt been replaced, its a good chance that the bearings have been replaced already.

One instance sticks out to me every time a thread like this comes up. My good friend Alan had a ATX with a similar noise. ( this was before I was big into SHO's ) And well you can read the rest. My point is.. If your noise is coming from your intake... Then the intake would be the first thing to tear down... If you buy a V6 SHO.. rod bearings are a must anyway.

Update, Oil was drained last night, this morning he checked the oil for pieces of metal and said the oil was perfect, no sign of any metal, he refilled the oil started the car, placed hand on the oil pan and no vibration. i am heading to the shop with my video camera and take a quick video and maybe someone here can take a listen and see if they have any idea's.

Does the sound change with rpm? engine load? etc???

It would be a good time to get out the mechanics stethoscope and listen in a few different spots on the engine to see if u can pinpoint a closer location.

It is very possible that the noise you are hearing is not coming from the intake, but from the pulley side of the engine. Or you could still have a tensioner that is having issues. Did he replace both? or clean them? I have heard many members have good luck with just cleaning the gunk out and putting them back in.
