Maybe i'm just too cautious and abit crazy when it comes to hearing noises and certain things in my SHO but i can't help to realise that my SHO won't go into 1st gear if i'm going over 20mph or it will be extremely hard to get it into 1st.
Now if i sit there in the quiet without the radio on and try to put it into first over 20mph give or take a few MPH i hear a windining noise it almost sounds like a cartoon noise vroooom type of sound. Is this something i should be worried about or is that just normal operation?

Thanks again

Edit *It always makes that winding type of sound when i go in first regardless of my speed*

I would say dont put it 1st anymore the way you are trying to.You are asking it to give you a serious prob that might not be so serious as of now.I never try to put my mtx in first once Im out of it, makes no sense to me and Ive already threw some diff pinns and you will too!Change your trans fluid to a more extreme type, synchromesh, royal purple etc..be easy for now and start looking for another mtx to be ready.Im not ragging on ya just dont go back to first once your out, Im trying to figure why you do that?

It's called First Gear Lockout. If you match the engine RPM to the speed of the transmission in FIRST at 20MPH(like 3500RPM...I think...I haven't driven my SHO in a while), it'll go...as long as you let out the clutch for a second...

There are 2 connections and 3 sections of the powertrain to remember.
Sections:
1. Engine.
2.Transmission input.
3. Transmission output.

Connections:
Engine to transmission input (clutch)
Trans input to trans output (when ANY gear is engaged)

When you are in neutral and the clutch is pressed, there are no connections. The output side of the trans, spins with the wheels. The input side of the trans, slows to a stop. The engine speed, is controlled by the gas pedal.

As soon as you let the clutch out, the input side of the trans spins up to engine speed...not wheel speed(It needs to be at wheel speed to allow engagement). This means that you will not be able to get into gear since the engine speed does not match the transmission output speed.

2 methods for acheiving "REV MATCH"(getting the input side of the trans to the same speed as the output side)

1. Engine speed match
When you match the speed of the engine to the speed of the wheels and let out the clutch, the INPUT side of the trans speeds up. When the engine side of the trans is at the EXACT same speed as the wheels, it'll drop right into gear and you wont even need the clutch. This is how you had to learn to shift with the old non-syncronized type of manual transmission from the 50's and earlier and it's why they always ground the gears.

2. Blocking ring magic
When you push the gear selector towards first gear, a little jobby in the trans pushes against a ****** and uses friction to speed up(or slow down) the engine side of the trans to the same speed as the OUTPUT side of the trans...voila...you can now drop into gear.

Your situation:
When you push your gear selector towards first at 20, the blocking ring (the little jobby in the trans)has lots of magic to do. It has to speed the INPUT side of the trans up to the same speed as the output side of the trans...all by it's lonesome if the engine is idleing or your clutch has been depressed.

the noise you are hearing is the blocking ring screaming for it's life as it speeds the input side of the trans up so that you can get into gear. You won't be able to get into gear until it has sped that input shaft up to match the wheels.

In other words, don't hunt for first when you are going 20 MPH unless you know how to revmatch.

Your transmission is acting as it should...for now. I would change the fluid or at LEAST make sure you aren't low...all transmission noises are louder when you are low on fluid.. (I strongly recommend flushing your trans..and stop hunting).

Umm, why would you want to shift to 1st while going 20 mph ? IF you are doing this for engine braking, better ask yourself, is it easier to replace a set of brake pads or an MTX, clutch, engine, or other drivetrain mechanical ?

So he can be in gear and ready to go by the time his car stops. Lot's of inexperienced manual transmission drivers hunt for first while slowing to a stop and still others hold the clutch to the floor while stopped...another no no.

Ummmm.....what the heck would you want to do that for? Are you serious? If you like your car, you'll learn how to shift, and quit trying to do things that your car was not made to do.
Why won't my car go into reverse when I'm going 20mph??? I don't understand......

Sorry if my post came across as bashing. I thought you wanted to go into first, and was wondering why. Sorry if I offended you.:sun:

Just remember to never ever downshift into first no matter what speed your at. Lowest gear that should be downshifted to is second.

Downshifting into 1st

I disagree somewhat that downshifting into 1st gear is a no-no. Imagine you drive up to a umm.. Wal-Mart and you need to slow down < 10 mph, as to not collect any pedestrians. I do a quick rev-match from 2nd to 1st, shift is barely noticeable. If you go in 2nd at that speed, you're lugging the engine below 1K rpm, and that's a bigger no-no. Or, if you drive around a parking lot looking for a spot and watch for other drivers to back out, or you drive through a school zone with 10 mph speed limit, etc. Sometimes shifting down into first is appropriate. Just don't forget to rev-match...:thumb:

Be nice fella's he's asking a legit question and trying to learn, we all weren't born with this knowledge at birth:)

Agreed, downshifting to first isn't bad so long as you aren't revving like a madman and pushing ******* the shifter. While I wouldn't do it much on the street (to preserve blocking ring life), I would certainly be doing it at racing events (with a proper rev match of course) because let's face it, the sho doesn't pull hard at 20mph in 2nd gear, but get that puppy in 1st coming out of a corner at 20... hooooldd onnnnn:naughty:

IMO u can't really lug it in 2nd gear............ and if u going that slow, a slower clutch engangment is better than going to 1st IMO. (not always)
Pretty much if the car is rolling, 2nd gear will be fine.

I think some people confuse lugging the engine with idleing in gear. yes do NOT idle in gear in 4 and 5th but 1-3 is fine. (traffic suxes sometimes)

If I'm racing, alot of times I'll go from 1st at 25. I never have a problem with getting it in, but it does whine.
