im not sure since my last subject was locked. once again i am SORRY for being rude in my posts. this car is driving me insane this is my 4th sho and by far the hardest to get running right. ive been fighting with this thing for months, and i should not have taken it out on the people on the forum. that being said. i checked the wires coming from the cps that run into the cid sensor. everything seems to look okay. except there is a bare wire that comes out of the harness and goes up the other wires stopping at about 2 inches from the connector. is this to keep the wires together? ground? it seems out of place. this is inside the aluminum heat shield wrap, along with two other wires.

here is a pic, you can see it coming out two the left of the red wire. it comes out of the harness that goes down to the cps. and stops right there in the pic. but it kind of just wraps around the other wires. ive seen this in wiring from audio cables. ground?

the only reason i am focusing on this is because of the hard starts and the fact i have a working tach while the cid is unplugged.

what is an efi shield? should i be making sure its all wrapped in that? who ever messed with it before, left some portion of the wires unwrapped.

I'm assuming it's a shield for electromagnetic interference. Don't know why it'd be EFI...

The aluminum is there to intercept the RF waves, and then it dumps it into the wire, which is connected to ground. The voltages coming out of that CPS and the CID are very very weak and quick as far as frequency, and as loud (RF-wise) as the engine is, I wouldn't be one bit surprised if that was your problem. I would recommend finding a new wiring harness...

Check the "how do I" section http://www.shoforum.com/index.php and look up wiring diagrams. Carefully identify all the wires that you can by inspecting them and their locations. For instance, the CID plug has "orange&red" "light blue" "gark green" "red & light green" wires. If you look up the harness a bit you will see that wire you are talking about. It's an antenna. Meant to absorb RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) so that the elctromagnetic interference created by the ignition system is not amplified by the car's stereo system. I don't think it is supposed to be connected to anything. only wrapped around the orange/red wire.
No gaurantees though...I'm no EE.

thank you guys for the excellent info. for the time being is there anywhere i could by some more of that shielding to rewrap the wires? what exactly is it made out of?

Well, let's see, it's just plain aluminum foil. If it's wrapped close to the CID and CPS ends, I wouldn't worry about those ends.

The aluminum foil is the shield and the bare wire is called the drain wire. The drain wire accepts the static from the shield and must be connected at one end to ground. It doesn't need to be connected at the other end, just one. The purpose is to intercept the huge magnetic field generated by the spark plug wires and other "broadcasters" and give them an easy path back to their ground.

I don't have the wiring diagrams in front of me, but I believe the shield drain wires connect to the backplane of the DIS module, which then, through it's two bottom holes connect to the intake crossover, which then connect to the rear plenum by way of the mounting bracket of the crossover, which then connects to the metal skin of the firewall by way of a flat braided ground strap.

This is a very important path, since I believe it is the only (and shortest) path that bleeds off the static buildup in the shield of the very sensitive Ignition wires. There is also a double ground wire in the valley of the block, but it is pretty difficult to get to.

Good luck,

Tom

thank you. you basically answered everything in this one post. thanks you guys.

You're welcome. Let us know how you make out. Everything I ramble on about is useless if it's wrong.

i did have one question, from what you say, everything is normal within the harness then? my concern was that bare wire ,which you guys schooled me on. like i said before my tach works with the cid sensor unplugged, ive been told it should be inoperative. do you think that has something to do with the wiring?

OK I just spent a few minutes researching your other posts. It seems like you have hung a lot of parts on this car. I have one question.

Have you verified that your plugs and wires are good?

And I don't just mean new. New wires have been known to not fit right. Check the way they fit on the plug. They should snap onto the top of the plug and seal around the valve cover at the top of the hole. Also, check the gap on the plugs. If they are super duper double platnum extra special plugs, try the run o the mill ones. Gapping the wrong kind of plug the same way as a standard plug can cause headachy hard to track down driveability issues.

well when my problems first started, i went crazy on parts and such. since then ive tried 3 different kinds of wires and plugs. what i have in right now are napa brand wires and (i know reviews for these arent that great from you guys ) split fire triple plats i think? they might be doubles . i know there the most expensive split fires for the sho. and actually they seal the plug wells and fit the plugs really well. and i made sure to gap each set to specs. i really wish one of you guys could drive it or listen to it. it feels like the car has like 140 horses. my girlfriend astrovan blew by me one day just messin around. its ridiculesly slow. ive ran countless self tests on it all to no avail. cylinder balance test is all clear. when you rev it up high. i do smell a mix of oil and fuel though. probably since its running so horrible right now. if you ask me it feels exactly like plugged cats. but i had them checked and they said they were good.
