Slow acceleration, stalling, other problems

My car has recently started being weak in the lower rpm range. It still gets good pull at around 4000 rpm though. The acceleration in the lower range is jumpy and it does not get moving fast at all. Even when at 45 mph, it takes forever to get to 55 while in 4th or 5th gear. Big loss of power. Also, whenever I come to a stop, the tach drops to raound 500 rpm, then it will either rise back to 1000 & idle fine, but then about half of the time it drops to zero & the engine stalls. Any idea on these problems? The gas mileage is slowly getting worse, so all things thought about, I'm guessing that I need new oxygen sensors. Any other ideas or things to check? Thanks

Well from 45-55 in 5th gear there won't be a whole lot of power. You're just not in the power band.

It sounds like your MAF is either bad or it just needs a good cleaning on the idling problem.

Your gas mileage could be pointed directly at the 02 sensors. Have you pulled any of your codes?

My biggest though when I 1st read this was damn, this guy needs a 60k. Has that been done yet? How many miles are on the car. I bet you a 60k and a good tune would make your car run ALOT better.

What parts of the 60k? My mechanic is having some trouble pinpointing this problem.

Check your codes to see if you have any faults. It's easy!

Check if you have oil in your spark plug wells. If you do its time for:

Spark plugs
New valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals
New Plug Wires
New crank sensor
New cam sensor
New Timing belt
New water pump

Spark Plugs, spark plug wires, and oil in the plug wells are the #1 cause of sluggish low end (high load) performance.

Pop out one of your front plug wires and let us know if there is oil on it. If there is, chances are good that you have found your problem.

As for the idle and stalling problem, depending on how many miles the car has on it your idle air bypass valve may need to be cleaned out. If you're lucky you can clean the carbon out of it and it will return to it's normal operation; if you're not, you'll need to replace it as the motor has weakened over time.
