Our 2010 MKS EcoBoost AWD makes a slight little ticky clatter for just a second or two when it starts up, I think only when cold. What is the noise, and is it a problem? I'm thinking timing guides or VVT not getting enough oil for a second. Thoughts? Is it common? Car only has 38k miles on it, otherwise fabulous.

Interesting - my 2013 and 2016 both called for 5W30.

And something on the Ford-Trucks.com web site is going on with Ford switching the 6.2L V8 from 5w20 to 5w30.

Not that it's going to help you here, I don't think, the "cold" viscosity is still 5w.

One thing to keep in mind with these engines is, they have what amounts to "solid lifters" - bucket-style cam followers that are shimmed to set the clearance.

You might need a valve adjustment...

Interesting is right - I had a 2012 and a 2015 Ford Super Duty, both with the gas 6.2L V8. The 2012 clattered like crazy upon startup. Not every time, but much more audibly than this MKS EcoBoost. Drove me nuts - traded to a 2015. That one clattered less frequently, but still occasionally did it. It appeared sometime between my 2012 and the new 2015 truck Ford installed a slower starter motor which theoretically cranked the engine longer before starting...allowing more time for oil pressure to build. In that case, the 6.2L's very small lifters on the ends of the roller rockers got the oil squeezed out of them by valve spring pressure, depending on what position the engine stopped in. I have since traded for a 2016 Powerstroke Super Duty. No undue noises with that engine, love it.

I thought the "DAMB" design still used hydraulic lifters in the design? Who makes valve adjustments any more? Have not heard of this.

Just checked fordparts.com to be sure, and they don't show any "hydraulic" anything on the Ecoboost 3.5L for my 2016. They do list a slew of "valve lifters" (bucket) in a range from 2.950mm thickness to 3.685mm. My two EB's both tick slightly at idle. Between injectors and valve train, I just figured it was normal.

If it were me, I'd rev it to red-line and hold it there for a while and see if it goes away - but I don't condone that to anyone else that's not under warranty

It makes no noise once running and idling. Just for a brief second at startup.

Very common at cold startup, no worries. If you switch to a non-Ford filter, the clatter may last longer. 5W20 Synblend is correct for the 2010. 2011+ went to 5W30.

Does your car do it?

It seems like it should not make any noise.

Don't have a SHO ATM. My statement is based on a collection of reports from many SHO owners tho.

+1. If you search the web you'll notice it's fairly common. Mine also makes this noise and I was concerned about it as well. It will make rattle noise on a cold start. But if I start it and turn it off it won't make it unless I let it sit for awhile.
