Hey guys, I was just wondering if the fan belt typically used in the SHO is a serpentine belt or not. I'm experiencing a little squeaking, and was told that a serpentine belt doesn't typically squeak, so I'm worried that it might be something with the alternator. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

As I said, I'm not sure if it's the fan belt squeaking. It's more of an occasional chirp (every 2 or 3 seconds) than a constant sqeak, and it only happens when the car is idling. As soon as I step on the gas, even slightly, it goes away completely.

In conclusion, anyone know if the fan belt is a serpentine belt? Or does anyone have any ideas what the problem with the car is?

Just lift the hood and look! :) It's a serpentine belt. Could be the belt, or a pulley/accessory bearing doing the squeeking.

Just to add a little terminology:

The SHO does not have a "fan belt" in the literal sense. The fans are electric.

On an ATX the SHO has a single, 6 rib serpentine belt that is tensioned with a spring, automatically.

On an MTX SHO you have 2 belts, one 6 rib and one 4 rib. Both are a "serpentine" style belt. They utilize manual tensioners and if the belts are a few years old its very possible they are in need of either a little more tension or replacement. I tend to run the belts on my MTX as loose as possible without squealing or slipping, because I want the bearings in my accessories and tensioners to last as long as possible.

The SHO does not have a fan belt. Only two accessory belts. Our fans are electric.

Does the chirp coincide with the actuation of the A/C compressor clutch? You can verify this by watching the compressor with the engine running an the A/C set to AUTO. If so, with a 3.2L automatic transaxle (ATX) SHO, you will need a new belt (Best prices: Gates K060854 RockAuto.com $24.79 or Goodyear 4060850 CarParts.com $20.19). If it is a 3.0L manual transaxle (MTX) SHO, you can try to tighten the belt by loosening the 14mm nut on the tensioner and turning the 5mm Allen screw in the clockwise direction until the belt is tight enough to stop the chirp. Tighten the 14mm nut to 25-36 lb-ft. If that doesn't stop the squeak, you may need to replace the belt or belts (P/S, water pump: Gates K040500 RockAuto.com $12.66, A/C, alt: Gates K060445 RockAuto.com $13.75).
