I finally found out why my SHO wounldn't start thanks to someone in this group. It is indeed the solenoid. We jacked the front up and I had a friend tap the solenoid and she started a couple of times. My question is, is it replaceable and do I have to remove the starter to replace it? How does the solenoid mount to the starter? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks again,
Wayne

I had the same problem. I believe there are a couple bolts that keep it on the starter. It's replacable, but for a few bucks more you can get the whole starter. Usually if the solenoid is going, the starter is on it's way. You're better off replacing it all I think.

I went to Autozone to purchase the solenoid for $32.95. Aren't the starters 100.00+ to replace? I am new to SHO's and used to have an '86 GT. I wish I knew that the K&N fit the SHO before I traded it. Do the K&N filters do anything for the SHO?

That the correct solenoid? Cause when I was looking for one, they had one that was on the firewall and one on the starter. On average the one on the firewall was 30 and the one on the starter was 65.

There isn't one on the firewall. They just gave me two when I asked.
Gen1's are on the firewall, Gen2's are on the starter.

I highly doubt you'll get the solenoid off without removing the starter. Why do the job twice. Just replace the whole starter.
Yes the starter will be about 90 bucks after the core charge.

I would just replace the solenoid, but I would remove the starter and check it out if it is old. Have the brushes replaced, its cheap. Almost all starters go out not because of real bad problems which would indicate replacing the whole starter, just brushes or corrosion on contacts like with the solenoid, as those are the weak links. Its a poor economy not to just replace the worn parts rather than replace the whole thing, though replacement keeps profits going to the rebuilders who know that all they have to do is replace brushes, clean them, and send them out again.
