SHO questions

hello again. as i siad in my newbie post, i am going to ask some questions about shos. The on im looking at is third gen. I have reasearched them before and know about the cam welding. The cams on this one have gone. How do i find out how much damage has happened and how much will it cost to replace that which was damaged?

the only way to know how much damage was done is to pull the heads. A timely and expensive job, but the only definitive way.

Its something you can do yourself with the right tools, knowledge and patience. If not, look at shops like www.NESHO.com to help you out. Im sure Chris will chime in on this post at some point

well, i have no money to spend on buying a whole new motor, so is it possible damage is only to the cams/head? is their a how-to on how to do this and where would i be able to buy just new heads? i saw somewhere on here that sho shop is down and someone else is coming up in their place. would they have something like that?

Then this isn't the car for you.

Repairing a cam failure motor, even on the cheap, is still an expensive proposition. Probably best to sell the one you got as is and try to find a running one. Hopefully you're not into it too deep.

no, i dont own it yet. It is owned by a freinds sister. I would trade it and money for my contour that runs perfectly. I was just mostly wondering about costs cause then that would decide how much money i received with the SHO in trade for my tour.

That would be a bad trade.

Most cam failure cars we buy, we don't pay more than $500. You're looking at $3000 to get the car running again, and that's without knowing if the tranny is shot or there are other problems. We recently had a customer from VA who bought a cam failure car for $100, but made the mistake of taking the car to Ford for a replacement motor and trans, then he came to us for the cam weld. He's now into the car for over $7000. On a good day he could probably sell it for $3500.

ouch. that would be a very bad idea. ill have to tell them that. they might reconsider. the freind thought i could replace the heads for less then a thousand.

You'd be lucky to remove the heads and put them back on for under $1000, without even getting into any actual repair work.

Anyone can probably do it themselves given enough time and patience, but for starters most people don't have a lift to remove the engine themselves. The engine has to come out the bottom of the car, and while a handful of people have managed to remove the engine in their driveway with some makeshift tools, it's not something for the faint of heart. Takes a lot of automotive knowledge and experience. I've rebuilt over 100 V8 SHO engines, and I still use the shop manual religiously when rebuilding them. Even my own cam failure engine, with access to a lift, all the right tools, and parts at wholesale still cost me over $1000.

Unfortunatly the SHO as a whole is not for the faint of heart. Its more intricate than a normal motor and unfortunatly when something breaks its usually expensive to fix.

If you want to get a decent SHO save up and get a running one.

Some cam failure cars (Beth's silver '96 was one) will still start every single time the key is turned. But, every time it's started you risk cracking pistons, which cost about $800 for a set.

The motor still has to be rebuilt.

Go ahead and buy them all, but don't come crying here when you're into them for big money and they still don't run!
