I feel a bit out of my league here, since I don't do the work on my car. But I am fortunate to have a 20-year old son who is a BMW enthusiast, and he does some of the stuff for me. Now I need to find a mechanic who can do some of the bigger stuff, who really knows this engine. ANy suggestions?

Based on what you all are talking about, it looks as though I'm going to need the 60K. I bought the car at 80K from a dealer, one owner, beautiful condition, in and out. Recently it was surging at high speeds and when we checked, one of the plugs had popped out, and there was oil in the well. Now that I've read all these posts, I realize this may be a sign that the 60K was not done yet.
My son is up for doing it. (He's done all the stuff on his BMW) but he needs to get some guidance through the process. I was going to take it to a shop. But now that I've gone through all your discussions, I realize I just don't know a shop where I could count on them really treating this engine right. That's why I posted the query about mechanics.
I'm teaching, so it will be mid-June when we plan to do this. Any helpful suggestions welcomed. Thanks. s'good

When I lived in San Diego I had the 60k done at the SHO Shop in Hunington Beach. Granted its a drive, but they put the SHO aftermarket on the map. I've had problems with their mail order customer service as have others, but in person they are good to deal with. You might wanna look at their website to see the different 60k 'packages' and decide which one is right for you. They have a slight tendency to upsell, so just get what you came for and you'll be fine. Only real trouble was the train ride there to pick it up, stupid amtrak.

I'm in the Granite Hills part of east county Dan Diego. I've done the timing belt/water pump/cps and valve adjustment.
I do classic car restoration but also own two SHO's and do all work on these and a friends.
I'm reasonably priced...email me if you're interested in discussing getting this done.
