I have a 93 MTX w/ 160 K on the engine and tranny. When the SHO makes the transition from acceleration to deceleration or vice versa. Basically when torque is applied and removed from tranny. The car seems to rock back and forth. Over the past two years the problem seems to be getting worse.

I thought it might have been an engine mount problem. I had the rear mount replaced as it was worn, but it didn't seem to make any difference. I don't have a shiny spot on my manifold either.

I looked at my subframe bushings, they look to be in good condition.

Would a worn tranny do this?

Thanks,

Chris

I would check out your tps. I had all brand new mounts and bushings on mine and a bad tps was causing the car to buck sometimes in first gear.

I had the rear motor mount replaced a year ago, it was the only one that required replacement. It didn't make any difference.

I'll recheck the motor mounts when I get a chance... The car feels like it is shifting back and forth when I get on and off the gas. When I say get on and off the gas, I say that mildly. I could be cruising at 35 mph, let off the gas and the car seems to lurch forward.

Anyone know what a worn out tranny feels like? OR worn out motor mounts? Both the engine and manual tranny have 160,000 miles...

Average lifespan for the MTX?

Thanks...

Oh, one last thing... When I said the car lurches forward.. I don't mean the engine rev's up and lurches forward. It's more like the weight of the car shifts forward when decelerating, and shifts back when accelerating.

Thanks again.

If the engine is acting properly and the motor mounts are healthy, you need to check those subframe bushings. A "lurch" is a new problem name to diganose. Do you have any other information to help us help you?

Imagine towing a trailer with a loose ball hitch connection. When you step on the gas there is a **** as the weight of the trailer shifts back on the ball hitch. When you get off the gas, the weight shifts forward on the ball hitch. In the car you feel each of the weight shifts. This just feels like its happening in the front end instead of the rear.

You know when the front end lifts up when you get on the gas, and drops when you get off of it. It's exactly like that, but rougher. I also don't have to get on the gas that much.

Maybe my motor is shifting around a bit... I just want to rule out the transmission / worn gears.

As I said, check those subframe bushings. You should also perform the front engine mount test where you apply the parking brake and slowly let out the clutch in a forward gear. If the radiator side of the engine's intake rises more than about 3/4" then the front mount is shot. Also look into the driver side wheel well and check the rubber of the transaxle mount. After two years of this behavior, it should be very obvious when you see the source.
