I will never understand why auto makers discontinue parts on vehicles no longer in production, but still found on the road in volume. There are still what, many numerous thousands of SHO's out there.......yet they discontinue a vital component needed to maintain these vehicles. Does a lot for consumer confidence in my opinion.

I may be a little out of the loop but isn't this a fairly simple part that we could have a job shop make if we needed in quantity or couldn't find a substitute?

Somebody posted a while back that SHO shims are the same as the ones used in Yamaha motorcycles. I wouldn't get too worried, some aftermarket supplier will step up to fill the void.

Rob94, WHy would ford stop making parts and send crate motors to scrap, CONSUMERS. THe whole point is to get us out of our 10 YO Taurus and into a new SES or whatever BS the dealers a passing out now on the SHO's slot in the line up. As for the Shims, I know the zx11 had a plug wrench that worked great on the SHO not sure about the shims.

Yamaha is under contract to make these engine parts for x number of years... I'm fairly sure the number was 17. That means, it should be 2005/2006 before engine parts are discontinued. I don't know about you, but I think this qualifies as an engine part.

I would stock up - I"m sure Josh T. is!

Toyota is using Yamaha engines in some models, as well. I don't know if the shims are the same diameter though.
Could this just be a rumour?

I work in a stamping house. You tell me the material, give me dimensions, and I'll propose to the company that they start producing these. I'll need the range of thicknesses required as well, and if these things are plated, etc.

In quantity, these things shouldn't cost NEAR what Ford wants.

If someone wants to send me one (or two, if intake / exhaust are different somehow), send me an email & I'll give you the mailing address. Thanks!

What are Shims exactly? Are they a tool for the 60k, or a part on the car? I always hear of shops wanting their shims back though. Didn't see it in the glossary.

In the picture below, the shim is the round, 2.5mm (approx.) thick metal disc that is installed on the top of the tappet, immediately under the camshaft lobe (upwards in this photo). You can see the thickness of the shim in the small notch in the tappet. The notch is to allow you to pop the shim out of the tappet to replace it during a valve gap adjustment. There is a required 0.30mm (0.25-0.35mm) gap between the camshaft lobe and the shim during the portion of camshaft rotation when the valve is closed.
