Alright guys does this mean I need a new clutch? Couple days ago when I pushed the clutch pedal in my 89 SHO down to the floor I heard a grinding noise coming from the clutch and the pedal was vibrating. Now the grinding is a little less but I need to shift with ALL MY MIGHT like it does NOT want to go into gear. When the car is off I can shift easier but when I turn it on I have to put my whole arm and shoulder into shifting the damn thing. Does this mean I need a new clutch or something else gone bad? I am gonna get a centerforce kit from summit but I was wondering how much labor was. Please give me some estimates if I do in fact need a new clutch. The kit is around 300 but how much for labor from various places? THANKS GUYS!

BTW you were quoted $300 for the CF kit for your 89? Was that with the 9.25" clutch or the 9.75"? Sounds like they gave you a price on the smaller older clutch.

Toss that old set-up, get a 9.75" flywheel (if you don't have one already) and either go with a stock replacement via SHO NUT ($219 to your door), or check IPT if you want something with more grip. I think they have about the best prices for higher friction discs and a re-inforced PP.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I don't know if my clutch is the 9.25 or the 9.75. I just looked up on summitracing.com the centerforce kit for the 89-90 shos and it came up with part # CTF-DF090086. Ok I know you will think I'm an idiot but the PP stands for pressure plate, right? In other words I need a new clutch altogether? Do you recommend I get the centerforce kit or a stock replacement? I have to be tight with money so the 100 bucks would be big. I don't beat on my clutch too much but once in a while I love to downshift and go for an occasional street race, not too often tho. How much would someone charge for doing a clutch job? I just want to make sure that its the whole clutch I need and not something else. Thanks again fellas

You'll need to make sure you know what clutch you currently have so you can make sure your replacement will fit the flywheel. 89-90 SHO's had a 9.25" clutch and a different flywheel, it was recalled and Ford's substitute was a 9.75" plate and bigger disc. The stock 9.75" set up has more holding power than probably any 9.25" variant (including the CF). The 9.75" centerforce set-up is around $500 I think.

OEM is a pretty solid clutch, assuming you don't beat it silly all the time. I ran 300 hp one a few of them last year. You can get SHO NUT's ceramic throw out bearing to help reduce finger wear (what happened to your current clutch). With the ceramic TOB it'll push that kit up around $300.

yes PP is pressure plate. SHO NUT kit comes with the pressure plate, and disc, pin, and TOB. Good idea to change the throw out bearing shaft bushings and washer to, as well as any other wear parts while you are in there.

As for labor, every shop is probably gonna be different. For me, I charge $275 labor (which probably does you no good since I don't even have an open weekend till about July).

drivinhard I can't thank you enough for your help. I am gonna order the clutch package from sho nut for 219 and add the ceramic bearing upgrade for an additional 74 beans. Thankfully I can still drive my car to the nearest shop with a little bit of extra high effort shifting. One last question, can you give me a list of some parts that should be replaced while the mechanic can be doing my clutch? Thanks again for all your help!

Yes you'll want to get your flywheel resurfaced. Good time to check motor mounts, tranny mount, subframe bushings, lower control arms, sway bar end links, rear main seal, carrier plate gasket, axle seals, oil pan seals, etc. Lots of easy access to stuff when you are doing a clutch...

Good time to install a Y=pipe too since you have to drop it to remove the transaxle.
