In an attempt to have the smoothest, tightest shifts possible I am rebuilding my rod shifter. All parts are being inspected, cleaned, greased, welded, painted, ect. I know all the spots to be welded and have already done so. I have replacement poly bushings for the stabilizer bar and got a new ball and socket from Josh at Shonut. I do however have a few questions...
First off, how stiff should the two rivited joints that connect near the tranny be? Neither have any excess play in them which I take as a good sign. However the one closest to tranny is pretty stiff compared to the other, which move about as easy as a new ball-joint. It isn't HARD to move around it just requires a little more effort. I haven't greased this one yet so maybe that would help. Any ideas?
Second, does anyone have any tips/ things to look out for when installing the new ball and socket? The old one seems to have a rubber bushing that I'm not sure if it needs to be reused. I'm assuming the old ball needs to be cut off the rod so do I need to install the new one in the exact same location, a different one, or is it not that critical?
Last, what are the key areas that need to be lubricated? And with what? This might seem pretty obvious but I HATE doing things more than once. My works motto might be "We do it nice, cause we do it twice!" but not mine. I have tried many searches but many of the links are broken/missing.
