Hey all.
There is a small black vacuum canister on the back of my intake manifold (92 mtx) that wasn't hooked up and the car was running like ****... first issue.

Is this vacuum canister supposed to rattle when shaken? It sounds like it's broken.

The vacuum lines weren't hooked to it, nor was the harness that seems to control the butterflies. Likely a major reason why the car was running so poorly.

Rattling is bad (unless there is rattlesnake in it, which would be very bad). The vacuum. actuator should have a harness connected to it and two vacuum hoses, IIRC

Thanks for the quick reply.
I was worried that was the case (not through snake part lol).

Is there a replacement for these canisters, or they only something you can get used?

Used only. That rattling is likely the one way flapper valve that has broken off on the inside. You can cut it open, epoxy that valve back on and then epoxy the two halves back together, if you're feeling ingenious.

By the way, those two hoses cannot be reversed.

I found the thread below when my car's butterfly were not opening/closing. Looking at the part number referenced, I found some new ones on ebay that worked when I installed it. Ford used similar ones for other purposes. Take a look at the part on your car and check the part number. I noticed there are some that looked similar, but some connectors pointed in a different direction. This was the part number I ordered:

FORD OEM NEW EGR VACUUM SOLENOID AIR VALVE CONTROL VALVE E8AE-9H465-BA

So if you search part # E8AE-9H465-BA on RockAuto Dorman makes one $15.06. It comes on the bracket for the 4wd of an Explorer but it is the part you need. Just remove it from the bracket and it will clip into the metal bracket on the intake manifold.
