So I got my first SHO about a week ago for almost nothing its a 1989 Mocha with 150k on and is in surprisingly great mechanical shape, the interior is not to great but usual wear and the exterior has rust in the usual spots. Now before I got it i took it for a test drive and and checked it out as thoroughly as possible and was happy with it since i plan on making it my first attempt at restoration, it has enough issues that it should be a good first project(going to do 60k and motor mount before I start driving it) but good enough that i can still drive daily for work. One problem was the trunk didnt open because the guy didnt have the key for it, after researching on here I was able to pop the trunk and was a little shocked to see the spring and strut through a hole in the tower in the trunk. It looks like the tower started to rust just under the welds where the top part connects to the trunk, and started going down. Surprisingly driving it doesn't feel any different than any other car and i dont hear any noises from the rear. I tried bouncing the rear suspension by just putting my wieght on the bumper and trunk to see it the tower would move, and it doesnt but compared to the car i dont weigh that much so im not sure how much of a judge that is. Now I was wonder if a body shop would be able to weld a patch back on its about a 6 inch wide opening that is about 7 or inches around the tower, or it i would be better off making a a bracket that bolted from the top of the tower to the trunk floor just as a safety precaution in case the suspension decided it would rather be all the way in my trunk.

lol, sound like he make it not open on purpose :p

They could patch it up, but I would assume if you did get under there and take care of the rust properly it would just continue to spread over time.

You have to take the back strut out. You can weld what is there or get another one from the wrecking yard. I had this happen on my 89. I got another shock tower, took the top off of it and welded it onto the existing tower in the car. Clean off as much of the tar undercoating that you can before you start and the job will go alot better. When you fix it, it will be A-OK again, mine has given me no problems at all. I bet it is the driver's side. The shock tower was virtually free and it took a few hours of work to take out the back strut and weld the top in the tower. Mine was so far up, it was in the package tray area and I took out my speakers and stuff to make it easier.
Maybe buy the rear struts on RockAuto and get a price to have them installed, and while they are doing that, suggest they weld in the new top on the shock tower. Either way, it is a good time to put some new struts in while you have it apart.

Your going to have to weld in a new shocktower in there... Not to much trouble doing that... as long as you can find one that's not rusted to ****
