Rotor Question

I have a '90 SHO and I need new rotors. Should I just have OE rotors put back on or should I look into an upgrade? If I was to get an upgrade what would the upgrade consist of and how much would it cost? Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Go to AutoZone and get the AIMCO rotors for $18 each for the front. Along with the Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads with a lifetime replacement warranty for about $30, you can have an excellent performing brake system for little cash.

If you driving it on the street as an every day driver, SDPATT's advice is top drawer.

The SHO Times web site has a complete discussion about brake upgrades. You can upgrade your 1990 to 1996 standards if you want to change some suspension parts as well as brake disks, bearings, and pads. (Lincoln size)

This upgrade will give you larger brake disks and pads. The quality of disks and pads can be the same as above, but a little bigger.

If you are doing all out road-course racing then look into Bear brake products, and take out a home equity loan.

As long as your in the mood to improve your brakes, get a top quality brake fluid, such as ATE blue or gold or Castrol GT LMA, and flush your brake system. These are top quality dot 4 fluids that will take high heat, and are both Low Moisture Activity (LMA) fluids.

There are several other high performance brake fluids available, including one available thru Ford. The all out racing type can be as much as $70 a pint! (See the SHO Times web site re. brakes and brake fluids)

I'm not sure as to if you still have 15's on there or not, but if you do want to upgrade, the cheapest route to the 95 upgrade is what I've found here. Find a set of any 94 or 95 ABS taurus/SHO/sable spindles, get a set of rotors for the same, and a loaded caliper set from autozone by morse for a 95 sho. The set comes with the caliper brackets, new slider pins, refurbished ford calipers, and pads. When I run my weaves at the track, I'll downgrade to the 95 brakes, with slicers I'll switch back to the 96's. If you do the 95 brake upgrade, all you'll need is pads rotors and brackets if you want to go the next step to 96. Just keep in mind, you'll need to pick up 4 caliper bracket to spindle bolts at the dealer, which run about a buck each. The 95 upgrade by itself is a night and day difference over the stock 89-93 brakes.

Thanks a lot for all the info. My SHO is my daily driver, so I'll probably go with sdpatts suggestion (love your car!). I didn't think I could get rotors for $18 a piece. I thought it would be at least $40 for one. I guess I'm still getting over owning a VW Jetta TDi shoot . That was just a MONEY PIT!! Thanks again!

Are you guys referring to the fact that SHO's are notorious for taking money? If so, I am expecting that. It's a 12yr old car. The Jetta I owned was 5yrs old but had already gone through a clutch, motor, and after a new motor I had to replace the head! It was a great car at first, but parts were just too expensive! I'm happy to handle the upkeep of my SHO. It’s an awesome car and in mint condition! ****, a clutch is $220 from Ford!
